I bought this product for my son to use for his violin clases. The book cover is strong and steady, the pages it’s self are thick enough to handle a boys careless flips.

Great Series!
This book and the ones in the series are just great for beginners! I took a few violin lessons but I am basically having to teach myself. Easy to follow and the CD is great! If you are new to the violin, get a book with a CD. I’m still on book #1 and have been for the past 2 months. I finally busted out the CD and wow, why didn’t I do it sooner! So helpful to hear the music and then play along and alone. Helps a lot and you really start to learn how to train your ear. I would highly recommend this book and #1 and 3 in the series.

Not a big fan…
I played through books 1, 2, and 3 and this is my honest opinion. While book 3 is a little different than books 1 and 2 in that it has more scales and technique studies, all 3 books are pretty similar. What I don’t like about these books is this: The exercises and songs you learn on one string are the same for all the strings. This makes it too easy to fall into playing from memory rather than by actually learning the notes on the fingerboard. You know how the exercise is supposed to sound because you have played it several times before so you just make the right sounds. I guess I am kind of old school in that I would prefer more note reading than these books offer. I am not saying that playing by ear is not a good thing, I am just saying that these books kind of fail in the “learning the notes well” department. JMHO

Essentials will help a lot
Essential Elements for Violin (and for other string instruments) are extremely useful. I got part 1 and after that part 2. Just by myself I learned the basics of the violin in a level, that I can prepare myself to play almost everything that I would. It was as a joke, but my wife order the violin for my son. but he decided to play cello, because was BIG. so the violin was sitting a while till I got Essential Element Book 1. when I started learning I realized how enjoyable and insparational was set up that manual. So, that book hook me up and now I’m playing violin. As a last word for the I can say: It is extremely intelligent way to learn violin. Highly recommend.

It comes with all kinds of tips and tricks as well as access to their website which gives the lessons online! It is a valuable resource for learning how to play an instrument! We needed this for my child’s violin lesson. My only complaint is she uses it to much and pages do eventually come out. Maybe they can work on that. Other than that it’s a great book for learning quick.

Good book with plenty of songs
Good book with plenty of songs. We are about to order the CD to accompany it, as it doesn’t come with it, but you can either download it, order it online or use the postcard to order it (for the price of postage). The CD’s contents are on the book’s back cover. My son will need this for school next year, so having it for the summer to practice with will only help!

I ordered volume 1-2 of this and also the Suzuki method and u gotta say this is BY FAR the best! I like how I can log into my library online with the activation code on book to play along to songs. Seriously, it’s amazing. U can also ordere the cd, but what’s the point! Just play it on your iPhone or laptop (I use my iPhone and sound bar via Bluetooth and play along)It’s so awesome. I’m 30 and self teaching and I definatelu recommend it

very, very good
the CDs/DVDs that come with this are pretty useless- if you are a complete beginner you really do need a teacher, there is just no substitute for that, but these books are a great tool. I hadn’t played in almost 8 years and was able to play decently again using these books as my only re-teaching tool in less than a week (but some things you just never really forget). If your teacher/tutor wants you to buy this- or you are brave enough to learn on your own- don’t think twice about buying these books, just do it!!

Great series, but Book 2 CD does not have all the songs!
At the time I write this review, I have been teaching myself violin for about 6 months. I have used the Essential Elements series and am thrilled with how easy to navigate and thorough they are. Book 1 teaches you the basics; Book 2 has been a good follow-up, but not a whole lot of new material is introduced. This book reviews the info learned in Book 1, teaches you how to play flat notes (whereas Book 1 covers the sharps), has some fun “performance” songs near the end, and very briefly covers sliding to another position and playing chords at the very end of the book. One thing that was frustrating to me- the CD that comes with the book does NOT have all of the tracks to play along with. Those CDs are one reason why I love this series- since I’m teaching myself, being able to play along with “backup” helps me make sure I’m playing the correct notes and corrects me if my timing is off. I was practicing one day, and all of a sudden my CD stopped because it ran out of tracks; I was only 1/3 to 1/2 way through the book!!! It was very frustrating that it is not mentioned in the description that you need to purchase the additional CD for all of the songs. The CD is found here:
Essential Elements 2000 for Strings (Play-Along CD Set, Book 2)
So, 4 stars for needing to purchase additional materials without much warning (I might let Amazon know though, so I can see if they’ll add it to the description), and also because not a whole lot of new stuff is brought up in the book. However, it is still an excellent series, and I would not be where I am now in terms of learning the violin without Essential Elements 2000!

TONS FOR YOU MONEY
once i got the book and started using, i see why it has been around forever. it is the best for self- or instructional-teaching. I gives the violinist the basic information needed to succeed. Of course, any one achieving mastery always turns to video, tutors, and more, but for someone trying to pick up the violin in a at-home setting can easily do so with this book. shares theory, techniques, scales and an evolving tutorial to understand what to do, terms to use and practical pieces to play. Very well written compared to others I have looked at.

Awesome Information!
I purchased this product because I wanted to teach myself how to play theViolin. I thought this would be a good option because it was a beginners series . I used to play the clarinet, so I already know a lot about music. I was inspired to learn by Lindsey stirling on YouTube. When I recieved the book it was in good condition. All the pages were perfectly intact and nothing was missing. My order was delivered a lot faster than I expected. The book also was a lot bigger than I thought that it would be. The content in the book is very useful. It’s a pretty good series and if you don’t know how to play this would be good for you! I don’t think a advanced player would benefit much from this book. I was also impressed because it was so informational but affordable. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who is a learner. You would probably also benefit from getting a teacher. If your in a school band this can be something extra you use as a study guide.

Lesson book
I understand that many instructors love this series, but I found ABCs of Violin a bit better for self study. The CDs are nice to hear what it is you are supposed to sound like and to play along with after you get the piece down. Do get both book 1 and 2 if this is the series you are going to use. Once you get going, it doesn’t take long to want more pieces to play that you like. I play every piece in the book, but I play the pieces I like much more often for practice. If you push yourself you can get through book 1 and 2 in less than 2 months. Do get the books with both the CD and DVDs, they are a big help.It may take hours of practice but when you start playing songs (pieces) you like it is a ball. I’m at 3 months now and am starting to learn Vivaldi’s Spring, and a number of Fiddle tunes. Bach’s Jesu (full solo version (advanced)) is still giving me fits, but I have just started learning second and third posistions.I find the advanced Fiddle books teach, or at least make you learn, double stops much more than many of the violin lesson books.Good luck and enjoy.

The CD that comes with this book gives you your own personal backup band. The software you can install on your computer lets you decide the tempo…slow as you try to master the tune and faster as your playing improves. With this method you can hear what the notes are supposed to sound like and learn the correct timing of the tune.

Wow exclt technique book
EElements is my favorite Violin book. I had studied using severals methods as Suzuki for example, that I found a little boring. But this book, and the EE series are just exclt. First the book are design for a easy comprehension and guide you in your day-to-day study. The CD is performed by a real orquestra, its an exception in the Hal Leonard books that are usually performance using synthesizer. The EE series for violin is very good option in your violin study. Totally recommended Much better that Suzuki

What my wife used to learn the uke….
From “Twinkle, twinkle little star,” to “Michelle,” I can hear amazing progress in the other room. She has used the book learning to play beautifully. Easy to follow because of tableture and music, so she is learning how to read music. Unlike many “how to” books, the layout is user friendly and contains the variety she was looking for. As a guitar player myself, some of the advanced arrangements are easily transferred, so we can pick and strum together. A good buy, even without the CD.

Not as Good as Book One
I thought this wasn’t has good as Book 1. I couldn’t use several of the songs included for practice. The book included the lyrics and chords for these, without the score, so I had no idea how the melody went. There were other songs with their scores and the instruction was just as good as Book 1. If you like the Hal Leonard Method, you will find the book useful, but be prepared for a little frustration.

I bought book one and the audio was embedded. I liked it so I went ahead and bought book two even though I am not ready for it yet.The audio is not embedded in this book and there is no code to access the audio. The content is probably as good as book one but you really need the audio as a beginner. I regret this purchase.According to the Hal Leonard website the audio content should be embedded by the vendor so it looks like Amazon screwed this up. I will update if I find out how to get the audio.

Could be helpful but certainly not a “method” at all!
I didn’t see any method in the “Method..” – it’s a bunch of scores loosely attached to various subjects like hammer-ons, pull-off and like, but 90% it’s picking notes and nothing else, no strumming, no picking patterns, let alone chord-notes melody or different musical genresThe bottom line, it could give you some additional ideas when you’re already good with the instrument, but don’t try to use it as a self-teach book, go straight for “Ukulele for Dummies” if you really want to understand the instrument

Good for adults, not suitable for children
Good for adults but not suitable for children due to the subject matter of some of the songs. “I plunged a knife into her breast” (Banks of the Ohio), fighting and drinking (Sloop John B), drinking (Rye Whiskey), going to jail (Pay Me My Money Down). imprisonment (Worried Man Blues), etc. This is the classic material of folk music and nothing wrong with it, but it is not for kids. For my younger uke students, I like Everybody’s Ukulele Method by Ukulele Mike Lynch.

Finishing Second Book
I’m not much of a judge of musical method books but I’ve finished book one and almost this second book and I am learning to play the ukulele. I’ve moved on to sheet music for songs that I’m interested in and that is fun. Most of these “method” books use old public domain music that is not very interesting. There are some online sources for specific songs with uke notation for very reasonable prices. Just look for sheet music.I think that both books of this series have been very useful. There is also a “chord finder” book in the series that is probably worth your consideration.Uke on!

A lot to learn here, but some missed opportunities.
After playing through book one of this method in the morning, I took the opportunity to play through book two in the afternoon. The format is the same as book one, and continues where it left off.The Pros, Weakness and Cons for this Ukulele Method:*Continues to have you pluck traditional melodies, learning new keys, notes and bits of theory as you go.*Continues to include traditional notation & tablature for most of the pieces.*Teaches you three major moveable chords, very useful information. The author does not, however, back this up with much practicle application (though there are dozens possible).*Covers hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides, but only provides one piece to reinforce these important techniques.*Covers a few new strumming patterns and techniques: Ragtime & Calypso Patterns and the Five-Finger Roll & Triplet Stroke.*Introduces the chord families of D, Bb and A as well as further exploration of minor keys. At this point, if you’re using this method, you should be used to the fast pace of learning new, sometimes difficult chords. As with the first volume, I think this is an excellent introduction to melodic picking, but does not fully capitolize on the opportunity to add harmonic counterpoint and other techniques of melodic soloing on the instrument. Chording continues to move along at a fast pace, but that is just the author’s approach – though I’d prefer a more gradual approach, with more reinforcement of the principles introduced (a lot of lost opportunity here). However, if you choose this method and follow through with it, you will learn a lot that you can apply to whatever music you choose to learn later on.M Ryan TaylorUkulelePlay.com

Great Way to Start
I like the size of the printed music and the fact that it has tablature along with the melody line and also the ukulele chords (and words). It is easy to follow, well written, and a quality book to get started. I play guitar so the chords and strumming came easily. This book starts with melody playing and helps me learn the location of the notes on the strings. It is a quality product. I also bought book 1. Together they cover most of the commonly used keys.

Good follow up from Book 1
Good follow up from book 1, however, you really have to have a good grasp of ALL the material in Book 1 before diving into this. Lots of theory is covered and it’s pacing is good. I teach a lot of youngsters and prefer not to teach them in method books with TAB. I get around this by not telling them how to read it HAHA! If there was a TAB free versions of this book I would give it 5 stars.

Like Method Book 1, I was skeptical about this method book, but this was just a reminder to me to not judge a book by its size. Every page of this 50 page book is chock full of lessons and songs that progress as you learn. This is a MUST for a new ukulele player.

A Really Good Start
I bought both books in this series and they really offer a good start. Simple and basic instructions in an easy to follow format. The books are a little over-sized but that makes them easy to read. The songs are presented in both notation and tab so even a novice can play songs right away.

Highly recommend this method
My son has studied guitar for the past 3 years. He finds the Alfred’s Basic Method challenges him and allows him to progress in his playing.. The level 2 book continues to introduce new notes, chords and scales. There are solos, duets and accompaniments. Alfred is noted for being a fast paced and complete teaching method. I would have to agree with that assessment. My son started playing young so his teacher started with 2 more basic methods. This method continues to challenge my son and move him forward in his guitar playing ability.

Serious Learning Only
I am relearning the Guitar after a 30 year break. I worked through the first book in this series and am now on the second. 30 years ago I didn’t pay much attention to learning the actual music I just memorized chords and played by ear. These books are excellent for learning all aspects of the method of playing guitar. It is a slower and harder process than just learning Guitar Tab but it is worth it if you have the time. I am actually doing both and I find that what I have picked up in the Alfred’s book helps incredibly even when playing from Tab.

Great if you are able to read sheet music
I would simply advise people 1) Be careful with your clicks 2) Make a copy of your order at checkout. I was going to purchase Alfred’s Book 1 because I’m a complete newbie to guitar. The “bundled offer” included a Book 2 and a Book 1 & 2. Wow, two volumes in one, a no-brainer right? So that’s what I thought I ‘clicked’ to put in my cart. Yesterday I received Book 2 which is basically a book of sheet music with minimal instructions. A perfectly good book for people who knows how to read music, but not much use to someone lacking basic skills. The book arrived in perfect condition and of acceptable quality for the low cost.

Challenging experience
I bought this book recommendation of my daughter’s guitar teacher. She is starting her fourth year of private guitar lessons (she’s 11) and has gone through the three youth manuals that were available. We got this one just before she left for summer vacation so she’d have something new to work on before she came back to lessons in the fall. Working through it on her own was definitely a challenge for her (she had difficulties playing with the CD, mainly because she couldn’t keep up and she was confused since some tracks have multiple parts being played and she didn’t realize she was only supposed to be playing one of them – she did not have a chance to see her teacher for any instruction after the book arrived) but she made great progress with it on her own during the summer. Upon her return, her teacher explained to her how to use the book along with the CD and she’s made great progress. It has helped her work on all facets of her playing – chords, rhythm, scales, melody, etc.

Best book for beginners with old time ethic.
This is a very comprehensive intro to the guitar. If one were to buy only one book to begin this should be the one. I have gifted it to two others already who were just beginning. For those who do not already read music, this will get them up to primary speed easily. If one were to simply follow this instruction and remain OFF YouTube, they would become proficient. The YouTube gig only complicates the process as well as displays many bad options. Just get a private quiet place and work through it. There is no shortcut, no play in 5 minutes. Just get over it and LEARN it properly. Without that ideal as a guide you will simply have a guitar in the closet somewhere soon. Without the old time ethic of simply settling in to actually learn something students will always give up and drift away from the goal.

Essential Book, but get the one with audio files.
Must have book for beginners to learn how to read sheet music. Beware, though, that this version does not have the accompanying audio files which makes things less useful since you can’t see how something is played, particularly for the more obscure tunes. Overall, would buy again if I lost it, it I’d get the one that has the audio files.

This book is outstanding! If you want to teach or learn by method, this book is really hard to beat. By the time you’re through all three sections, you’ll be able to:-Read music-play most any chord in a pop fake book-know more than basic rhythms-know finger picking patterns (including Travis picking)Once done, you’ll be able to pick up just about any guitar songbook and play along.

Not a bad start
This is more for a begginer however its lessons do go from very begginers to the experts. In the start it does tell you how a scale is formatted and notes are counted, does spend time teaching you to read them. However thats what I wanted, yes I know the scale (I played clarinet in school) yes I know how to read notes. I also didn’t know how to play a C on a guitar. This is not really for someone who wants to just play songs on this is more for someone who wants to learn a wide verity of songs, from country to rock, classical to metal. If you want to specialize in one maybe this book isn’t for you. However I like this book because its not just a tab book of here is Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” (its playing on the TV at this time) or whatever song you may want to play.

I hate going to music stores: limited choices, inflated prices on materials written decades ago, trying to find options sourced from other stores… Modern music outlets just suck. The fact that I can buy the same book online, minus the triple inflated price point because of DRM coded audio books included, is amazing. Wife and sister-in-law will love using this to learn and for me to brush up on my music reading skills that are lacking.

Hal Leonard’s marketing sucks – Buy books from fundamental changes instead
So here’s the deal I got exactly what I ordered. There are two versions of the book. One is about 10 bucks more and under the “guitar method” on the front cover, top left, there is (in 10 point smaller type “Audio Access Included”).My book doesn’t have that. I purchased this precisely because the Bass Book came with audio, I just didn’t realise there is a version without the audio. And as others have pointed out, why would you sell a version without the audio. This is pretty scummy, I don’t really mind paying extra (but get this: audio is *free* with the excellent “fundamental changes” books). But having two versions, with no way to get the extra content is just annoying.I went to the Hal Leonard website and there seems to be no option to purchase the audio tracks.Amazon should make it clearer in the listing that there are two versions. So now I am faced with the choice of just using this as is, or returning it (which is a hassle). As the other 1 star reviews might indicate this is just dumb deceptive marketing. Change the cover in a more visible way, or offer the means to purchase the content online. how hard could the latter be? you’d actually make customers happy.Stupid, stupid, stupid.Makes me want to avoid Hal Leonard products in future. And that’s a shame, because the content seems pretty good.

Exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been teaching myself to play and using a lot of online courses but there is nothing that compares to starting from scratch and learning the proper way. This book does not spend a lot of time on form but it does provide the rudimentary basics beginning with basic notes and music reading. If I am ever able to master everything this book has to offer I will not only be able to play guitar, I will be a musician.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that want to learn to play the guitar!!! I have been playing acoustic Guitar for several years using tabs.. I decided i would like to learn to read music and play it on my guitar…. This book makes reading music and playing it super easy!!! You learn the notes one string at a time, at your own pace…. And it don’t stop there you learn chords, strumming(something i had problems with) and more. I have other lesson books that don’t come anywhere close to comparing to this book…

The Best, Most Complete Basic Guitar Method Book
I have been teaching guitar for more than 40 years, and over those years I spent a lot of time with a couple of other popular guitar methods, specifically Alfred’s Basic Guitar and the similarly titled book published by Mel Bay.In my opinion, the Hal Leonard guitar method is more complete than any of its competitors. I used to teach chords on my own, and strumming and finger picking techniques, and leave the book to teach note reading, but the Hal Leonard book does it all and, most importantly, it seems to introduce new things at the right times in the student’s development.

Excellent book for beginning guitarist, and for other players needing music reading practice
This book is good for kids and adults alike. Goes nice and easy, nothing too complicated, but still covers all the basics. Would highly recommend for anyone just beginning to play guitar. It’s also a great refresher for those who have been playing chords awhile, but never learned to read music. I’ve been playing guitar for 8 years, but mostly chords. I never really practiced reading music. My son is now taking lessons, and his teacher uses this book. I’m now learning along with my son. It’s never too late to teach an old dog a new trick!
