2-Teachers Approved
Bought this book for my son beginning drums back in May since it was recommended by his teacher, and now 6 months later, he’s still banging along in beat with the rhythms! We even had to switch teachers a couple months ago, and the second teacher liked this one so much, she’s now recommending it to other students.

Alfred’s Beginning Drumset Method
I decided I wanted to learn the drums so I sought out an instructor and this is the book he ask me to purchase. As the middle age student I found the book to be easy to read and follow. The DVD is helpful for the different views and listening to how the beat is supposed to sound. This book combined with a good instructor has been a great teaching tool.

Now to find a teacher to work with this book
as a struggling midlife crisis drumming student, it has been difficult finding “THE” one book from which to learn and reinforce “the basics” of drumming. After about a dozen purchases (or two), I found the Alfred Drumset Method Book. There are a LOT of methods for teaching drumming, and many methods for learning.I started drumming about 18 mos ago – about a year after my 10 year old son started snare drum classes in school – with a 90 year old semi-retired jazz drummer (father of a friend of mine – he still had 32 students up to July 2005 – retired due to a stroke but he still helps me out occasionally when I visit) and his methods were great, but the books he used were upwards of 60 years old (Roy Burns’ Elementary Drum Method, Joel Rothman’s Rolls Rolls Rolls, Ted Reed’s Progressive Steps to Syncopation, Stone’s Stick control), heavy on rudiments, marching rhythms, and he’d play vibes while I and my son took turns playing rock, shuffle and jazz grooves w/ him. I’ve heard his students over the years and his methods worked, but as an adult, physician, post-post graduate I was looking for another method outside of the way he was presenting it to me.What works about the Alfred book for me is this: simple 4/4 rock grooves, introductions of simple progressive bass, snare, tom changes around the set which reinforces independence and fills, a visual and kinesthetic introduction to fills and 4 bar riffs and a similar treatment of jazz rhythms. It’s done in a way that builds rapidly to a finished product where learning the components separately wasn’t giving me the satisfaction I was looking for. Kind of like learning how to drive by being given a five minute review of the controls and then driving around a parking lot versus taking an auto mechanics course for six months before seeing what a finished car looks and feels like.Somehow this makes sense to me where “Drumming for the Complete Idiot” and similar books didn’t work. Or maybe it was torturing myself with those other books for so long that now with the Alfred Method, it all comes together. My son and I are playing together across the basement (he has his set, I have mine) and learning from each other. When he needs books, I’ve got them, and he uses the Alfred book too, but it’s time to find another teacher for one on one.The Alfred Drumset Method, a good investment. But unless you’re a real self-starter, find a teacher who will work with you with it.

Poor Kindle Version with no Sound Files or Links
This review is for the kindle version of the book – and the review I wish I’d read before I purchased this book. This is a facsimile edition, and none of the pages are dynamic or interactive. Even the table of contents is just a picture of the text from the book. There are no links, there are no sound files for listening to the sound examples, and very little instruction in the text of the book or explanations of the concepts. You need a teacher to know what to do, because the book does not explain things beyond a sentence or two. This book is NOT for a self-learner trying to learn how to play a drum set. This same book thru iBooks is dynamic and at least has has all of the sound files, and costs $7.99 from iTunes. I wish I’d known that earlier, because I don’t want to buy this lame instruction book twice, or pay $10.99 for the CD only thru Amazon in order to hear the sound examples of the lessons. This kindle version is a hack job, and when did they write this and take the photos — 1982? Skip this book and get The Complete Idiots Guide which I am ordering soon.

Tip –
You MUST have these books and CDs if you are serious about learning the Drumset!
I use Alfred’s Drumset Books as the textbooks in the drumset courses I teach at our local music school. The books are well written, and the accompanying CDs (which can be ordered separately) contain clearly-recorded examples of every chart in the book. These books and CDs are a MUST for any aspiring student of drumset percussion!

Excellent Sequence of Material, Great for Beginner and Intermediate Drummers
I have been teaching private drum lessons for many years. I have settled on this one for almost all of my beginner drum students, and here is why:-Excellent pics of how to hold the drum sticks, how to play heel-up or heel-down on the bass drum and hi-hat;-Clear description with pictures of the parts of a drum set;-Excelllent, clear isntructions throughout the book above and below the drum grooves and exercises;-Great songs to play along with, after learning the techniques needed to achieve this goal;-Book comes with CD if desired, which makes learning the grooves even faster for students without a private teacher;-Logical layout and sequence of techniques. *******This is my favourite and most important part of this book. It lays out the grooves and fills in an excellent sequence from simple to intermediate, to advanced level material. Many, many drum books that I have and have used or taught from are lacking in placing the information in a logical sequence.I recommend this book very highly for all drummers starting out, and for intermediate drummers looking to fill in the gaps before they move to an advanced level.

would have been 4 stars but no sound files
At a private teacher I do like this book…. but obtaining sound files is proving to be next to impossible. Of course you can shell out 13.46 for the cd but that seems a little unfair. Anyway, I did find it in iTunes store and purchased it and … viola….the sound files are included and actually will play….. but they are too fast for beginners. My plan was to find these files on my laptop (I know they are not coming from the cloud as they work even when I turn off my wifi) and use the Anytune app to slow them down…. but I can’t find them on my hard drive! They are there somewhere … but I can’t locate them. Anyway, if you are reading this and have found these files please let me know in a review. I would say in the questions section but for some reason I can’t find the “ask question ” link…. ugh.

Been around for a generation
The original edition(s) of this classic beginner’s book date back to the 1960s. When I was 8 or 9 years old (1965-ish), my dad bought a beginner’s guitar for me, along with this book. I was glad to see that the book is still around [in an updated edition], and I bought it as a future gift for my grandson… or someone else if he decides he doesn’t want to learn the guitar.

very good
My friend wanted me to teach her 8 year old son how to play the guitar, so she asked a retired music teacher what a good book to use is, and he recommended this one. So we each got it and so far I am very pleased with it. I have never known how to read music (I learned to play chords years ago, but never to read music)but this book teaches to read music as you learn which string of the guitar plays which note and where it is on the music staff. I am learning things as I teach my little friend also. I really like this book. It is simple to understand and it is laid out in a way that I (and my student) don’t feel overwhelmed. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about playing than just chords.

Easy to understand and very helpful
I’m three years in to re-teaching myself piano with Alfred’s books and I’ve always wanted to play guitar as well so I bought this one. All of Alfred’s books are easy to understand but, as with anything, practice makes perfect. I’ve been doing the lessons for just over a month now and am pleased with my progress. Playing any instrument takes time and practice and I find myself wishing I could play more than three simple lines of ‘Ode To Joy’ but ,as with the piano, I know I’m learning things at this necessary stage and this book is very helpful.

Not the most inspiring elementary music book.
This is an elementary level book, which has pictures, fretboard diagrams and standard notation. Many of the songs are traditional ones but others would be unfamiliar to the twelve year old target reader. It was designed to use song files which were not included and not linked so I suppose this means the learner must learn the song before they can hear it played. So I doubt that any child I know would be motivated to practice without strong mentoring from a teacher or family member. At this point I’d say it would not be as effective otherwise.

Good method, but not so good theory
It seems to progress in a very methodical way from one string, two fingers, onto the next string and eventually all fingers. So the student can work up those callouses and build the finger strength gradually. I’m not sure I like how the theory is presented, and so I use a separate book for the music theory. That’s why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Miss the chord chart
It is still a good tutorial for learning to read music on a guitar. However, I REALLY miss the chord chart that they used to have inside the back cover. It is now best for only note by note playing.I used this many, many years ago when I was learning guitar, so this has probably been through several new editions since then. But, one of the most useful references was the the index with finger charts for nearly any chord. If I had known that it no longer contained this, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it. Will have to use on-line chord references instead.

The book arrived exactly as described and in new condition. This is the one my daughter needed for her violin class at a lower price than other places.

Great Series!
This book and the ones in the series are just great for beginners! I took a few violin lessons but I am basically having to teach myself. Easy to follow and the CD is great! If you are new to the violin, get a book with a CD. I’m still on book #1 and have been for the past 2 months. I finally busted out the CD and wow, why didn’t I do it sooner! So helpful to hear the music and then play along and alone. Helps a lot and you really start to learn how to train your ear. I would highly recommend this book and #1 and 3 in the series.

Not a big fan…
I played through books 1, 2, and 3 and this is my honest opinion. While book 3 is a little different than books 1 and 2 in that it has more scales and technique studies, all 3 books are pretty similar. What I don’t like about these books is this: The exercises and songs you learn on one string are the same for all the strings. This makes it too easy to fall into playing from memory rather than by actually learning the notes on the fingerboard. You know how the exercise is supposed to sound because you have played it several times before so you just make the right sounds. I guess I am kind of old school in that I would prefer more note reading than these books offer. I am not saying that playing by ear is not a good thing, I am just saying that these books kind of fail in the “learning the notes well” department. JMHO

Essentials will help a lot
Essential Elements for Violin (and for other string instruments) are extremely useful. I got part 1 and after that part 2. Just by myself I learned the basics of the violin in a level, that I can prepare myself to play almost everything that I would. It was as a joke, but my wife order the violin for my son. but he decided to play cello, because was BIG. so the violin was sitting a while till I got Essential Element Book 1. when I started learning I realized how enjoyable and insparational was set up that manual. So, that book hook me up and now I’m playing violin. As a last word for the I can say: It is extremely intelligent way to learn violin. Highly recommend.

Essential Elements is what I used to learn music in band as a kid. As an adult I am trying to expand my musical knowledge and this has been a great help! It comes with all kinds of tips and tricks as well as access to their website which gives the lessons online! It is a valuable resource for learning how to play an instrument! I bought all 3 volumes for Violin.

Great lessons!
We needed this for my child’s violin lesson. My only complaint is she uses it to much and pages do eventually come out. Maybe they can work on that. Other than that it’s a great book for learning quick.

Good book with plenty of songs
Good book with plenty of songs. We are about to order the CD to accompany it, as it doesn’t come with it, but you can either download it, order it online or use the postcard to order it (for the price of postage). The CD’s contents are on the book’s back cover. My son will need this for school next year, so having it for the summer to practice with will only help!

Makes u feel like a superstar
I ordered volume 1-2 of this and also the Suzuki method and u gotta say this is BY FAR the best! I like how I can log into my library online with the activation code on book to play along to songs. Seriously, it’s amazing. U can also ordere the cd, but what’s the point! Just play it on your iPhone or laptop (I use my iPhone and sound bar via Bluetooth and play along)It’s so awesome. I’m 30 and self teaching and I definatelu recommend it

very, very good
the CDs/DVDs that come with this are pretty useless- if you are a complete beginner you really do need a teacher, there is just no substitute for that, but these books are a great tool. I hadn’t played in almost 8 years and was able to play decently again using these books as my only re-teaching tool in less than a week (but some things you just never really forget). If your teacher/tutor wants you to buy this- or you are brave enough to learn on your own- don’t think twice about buying these books, just do it!!

Great series, but Book 2 CD does not have all the songs!
At the time I write this review, I have been teaching myself violin for about 6 months. I have used the Essential Elements series and am thrilled with how easy to navigate and thorough they are. Book 1 teaches you the basics; Book 2 has been a good follow-up, but not a whole lot of new material is introduced. This book reviews the info learned in Book 1, teaches you how to play flat notes (whereas Book 1 covers the sharps), has some fun “performance” songs near the end, and very briefly covers sliding to another position and playing chords at the very end of the book. One thing that was frustrating to me- the CD that comes with the book does NOT have all of the tracks to play along with. Those CDs are one reason why I love this series- since I’m teaching myself, being able to play along with “backup” helps me make sure I’m playing the correct notes and corrects me if my timing is off. I was practicing one day, and all of a sudden my CD stopped because it ran out of tracks; I was only 1/3 to 1/2 way through the book!!! It was very frustrating that it is not mentioned in the description that you need to purchase the additional CD for all of the songs. The CD is found here:
Essential Elements 2000 for Strings (Play-Along CD Set, Book 2)
So, 4 stars for needing to purchase additional materials without much warning (I might let Amazon know though, so I can see if they’ll add it to the description), and also because not a whole lot of new stuff is brought up in the book. However, it is still an excellent series, and I would not be where I am now in terms of learning the violin without Essential Elements 2000!

TONS FOR YOU MONEY
once i got the book and started using, i see why it has been around forever. it is the best for self- or instructional-teaching. I gives the violinist the basic information needed to succeed. Of course, any one achieving mastery always turns to video, tutors, and more, but for someone trying to pick up the violin in a at-home setting can easily do so with this book. shares theory, techniques, scales and an evolving tutorial to understand what to do, terms to use and practical pieces to play. Very well written compared to others I have looked at.

Awesome Information!
I purchased this product because I wanted to teach myself how to play theViolin. I thought this would be a good option because it was a beginners series . I used to play the clarinet, so I already know a lot about music. I was inspired to learn by Lindsey stirling on YouTube. When I recieved the book it was in good condition. All the pages were perfectly intact and nothing was missing. My order was delivered a lot faster than I expected. The book also was a lot bigger than I thought that it would be. The content in the book is very useful. It’s a pretty good series and if you don’t know how to play this would be good for you! I don’t think a advanced player would benefit much from this book. I was also impressed because it was so informational but affordable. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who is a learner. You would probably also benefit from getting a teacher. If your in a school band this can be something extra you use as a study guide.

Lesson book
I understand that many instructors love this series, but I found ABCs of Violin a bit better for self study. The CDs are nice to hear what it is you are supposed to sound like and to play along with after you get the piece down. Do get both book 1 and 2 if this is the series you are going to use. Once you get going, it doesn’t take long to want more pieces to play that you like. I play every piece in the book, but I play the pieces I like much more often for practice. If you push yourself you can get through book 1 and 2 in less than 2 months. Do get the books with both the CD and DVDs, they are a big help.It may take hours of practice but when you start playing songs (pieces) you like it is a ball. I’m at 3 months now and am starting to learn Vivaldi’s Spring, and a number of Fiddle tunes. Bach’s Jesu (full solo version (advanced)) is still giving me fits, but I have just started learning second and third posistions.I find the advanced Fiddle books teach, or at least make you learn, double stops much more than many of the violin lesson books.Good luck and enjoy.

I am a student who is just finishing Essential Elements 2000, Book 1. This is the series that my instructor likes to use. If you purchase the Essential Elements 2000 Violin Book 2 Bk/CD you will also want to purchase the Elements 2000 for Strings (Play-Along CD Set, Book 2) as not all of the songs in Book 2 are on the companion CD.

your own personal backup band
The CD that comes with this book gives you your own personal backup band. The software you can install on your computer lets you decide the tempo…slow as you try to master the tune and faster as your playing improves. With this method you can hear what the notes are supposed to sound like and learn the correct timing of the tune.

Wow exclt technique book
EElements is my favorite Violin book. I had studied using severals methods as Suzuki for example, that I found a little boring. But this book, and the EE series are just exclt. First the book are design for a easy comprehension and guide you in your day-to-day study. The CD is performed by a real orquestra, its an exception in the Hal Leonard books that are usually performance using synthesizer. The EE series for violin is very good option in your violin study. Totally recommended Much better that Suzuki

Good starter book
According to my daughter, who really uses this book: She felt that it’s a good starter book. This was a book that they used in orchestra at her elementary school. She wanted to continue learning, and since she was familiar with this book decided to get it. It provides her with examples and also a cd for her to hear how it should sound.
