Great for beginners!
Bought this for my 11 year old who plays electric guitar. At first I didn’t love that it wasn’t full songs but it’s great for his short attention span. It’s handy for short practice sessions and easy to learn from. Glad I bought it!

Use for repetoire, don’t use for learning
I’m a guitar teacher, so my review is biased towards music education. My view of this book is that it has good content – if you can already play some guitar and want to quickly expand your repertoire, this book fits the bill. It has a lot of great and recognizable riffs, and you’re likely to find something in here that you don’t already know and can learn quickly to add to your personal catalog. (Note, many of the “songs” are really just a couple of bars with the main riff, but it’s a good starting point to find songs you’d like to learn.) I use many of these riffs in my lessons. But, and this is a big but, the book leaves a lot to be desired as a “method”. It shows you how to play some things, but addresses virtually none of the why. This stems from – you guessed it – not teaching music, but teaching tabs instead. This leaves the depth of music in this book only surface deep – it’s like learning to read a book out loud, but not understanding what any of the words actually mean. So, I’m going to split the bill and give it 3 stars. If you are an intermediate or better guitar player, you will likely find some useful things in here and can use this book to teach yourself repertoire. But if you are a beginner, do yourself a favor and don’t start here – get yourself a book with an actual music method (I like Hal Leonard’s regular guitar method book) and a good teacher to go through it with. Learning to read music is an invaluable skill to have, and will lend itself to understanding what it is that you’re actually playing.

Fun
This book is a lot of fun to go through. I will admit however, it is not a part of my daily practice routine, but more a part of when I want to just get on the guitar and noodle. It has a lot of short riffs to it that are fairly simple, even for a beginner. For the price of the book, I definitely recommend it.

Really good book BUT! Once I began reading it none of the audio clips would play in my Kindle apps. Not the Android, not the PC version. The audio clips worked fine when I was looking at the book sample before I purchased.Back to the content… Other than the audio clips not working for me… the rest of the content seems to be really good. Three Stars for the bad audio clips.

Different from other HL guitar books!
This book takes the beginner approach from their other books and turns it upside down. The “riffs” all start from the lowE string vs starting on the high E. The riffs are easy and mostly well known and fun for the student. The only problem is that they only learn the riffs and not the whole song. The images are all in “tab” orientation and look upside down in the book.

Recensione Hal Leonard Guitar Tab Method Book One
The author takes us by the hand and guides us step by step through the fantastic world of music, in this case specifically centered on the instrument that, more or less, we all have, at least once, tried to play the guitar!Just an excellent job that the author did in preparing this manual. Inside, many tips, explanations and practical explanations on how to get started, well presented even for a neophyte like me. I was afraid in too difficult a reading and that it would discourage me, but the guide is gradual and helps to make progress starting from the basics. There are tips on how to choose the guitar, what it is made of, how to tune it, the posture to use while playing, scales, chords, etc … It also suggests some techniques for playing without a pick, to embellish the songs, to improvise, in short, a small bible to devour !!!!

Great Series!
This book and the ones in the series are just great for beginners! I took a few violin lessons but I am basically having to teach myself. Easy to follow and the CD is great! If you are new to the violin, get a book with a CD. I’m still on book #1 and have been for the past 2 months. I finally busted out the CD and wow, why didn’t I do it sooner! So helpful to hear the music and then play along and alone. Helps a lot and you really start to learn how to train your ear. I would highly recommend this book and #1 and 3 in the series.

Not a big fan…
I played through books 1, 2, and 3 and this is my honest opinion. While book 3 is a little different than books 1 and 2 in that it has more scales and technique studies, all 3 books are pretty similar. What I don’t like about these books is this: The exercises and songs you learn on one string are the same for all the strings. This makes it too easy to fall into playing from memory rather than by actually learning the notes on the fingerboard. You know how the exercise is supposed to sound because you have played it several times before so you just make the right sounds. I guess I am kind of old school in that I would prefer more note reading than these books offer. I am not saying that playing by ear is not a good thing, I am just saying that these books kind of fail in the “learning the notes well” department. JMHO

Essentials will help a lot
Essential Elements for Violin (and for other string instruments) are extremely useful. I got part 1 and after that part 2. Just by myself I learned the basics of the violin in a level, that I can prepare myself to play almost everything that I would. It was as a joke, but my wife order the violin for my son. but he decided to play cello, because was BIG. so the violin was sitting a while till I got Essential Element Book 1. when I started learning I realized how enjoyable and insparational was set up that manual. So, that book hook me up and now I’m playing violin. As a last word for the I can say: It is extremely intelligent way to learn violin. Highly recommend.

Good book with plenty of songs. We are about to order the CD to accompany it, as it doesn’t come with it, but you can either download it, order it online or use the postcard to order it (for the price of postage). The CD’s contents are on the book’s back cover. My son will need this for school next year, so having it for the summer to practice with will only help!

very, very good
the CDs/DVDs that come with this are pretty useless- if you are a complete beginner you really do need a teacher, there is just no substitute for that, but these books are a great tool. I hadn’t played in almost 8 years and was able to play decently again using these books as my only re-teaching tool in less than a week (but some things you just never really forget). If your teacher/tutor wants you to buy this- or you are brave enough to learn on your own- don’t think twice about buying these books, just do it!!

Great series, but Book 2 CD does not have all the songs!
At the time I write this review, I have been teaching myself violin for about 6 months. I have used the Essential Elements series and am thrilled with how easy to navigate and thorough they are. Book 1 teaches you the basics; Book 2 has been a good follow-up, but not a whole lot of new material is introduced. This book reviews the info learned in Book 1, teaches you how to play flat notes (whereas Book 1 covers the sharps), has some fun “performance” songs near the end, and very briefly covers sliding to another position and playing chords at the very end of the book. One thing that was frustrating to me- the CD that comes with the book does NOT have all of the tracks to play along with. Those CDs are one reason why I love this series- since I’m teaching myself, being able to play along with “backup” helps me make sure I’m playing the correct notes and corrects me if my timing is off. I was practicing one day, and all of a sudden my CD stopped because it ran out of tracks; I was only 1/3 to 1/2 way through the book!!! It was very frustrating that it is not mentioned in the description that you need to purchase the additional CD for all of the songs. The CD is found here:
Essential Elements 2000 for Strings (Play-Along CD Set, Book 2)
So, 4 stars for needing to purchase additional materials without much warning (I might let Amazon know though, so I can see if they’ll add it to the description), and also because not a whole lot of new stuff is brought up in the book. However, it is still an excellent series, and I would not be where I am now in terms of learning the violin without Essential Elements 2000!

TONS FOR YOU MONEY
once i got the book and started using, i see why it has been around forever. it is the best for self- or instructional-teaching. I gives the violinist the basic information needed to succeed. Of course, any one achieving mastery always turns to video, tutors, and more, but for someone trying to pick up the violin in a at-home setting can easily do so with this book. shares theory, techniques, scales and an evolving tutorial to understand what to do, terms to use and practical pieces to play. Very well written compared to others I have looked at.

Awesome Information!
I purchased this product because I wanted to teach myself how to play theViolin. I thought this would be a good option because it was a beginners series . I used to play the clarinet, so I already know a lot about music. I was inspired to learn by Lindsey stirling on YouTube. When I recieved the book it was in good condition. All the pages were perfectly intact and nothing was missing. My order was delivered a lot faster than I expected. The book also was a lot bigger than I thought that it would be. The content in the book is very useful. It’s a pretty good series and if you don’t know how to play this would be good for you! I don’t think a advanced player would benefit much from this book. I was also impressed because it was so informational but affordable. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who is a learner. You would probably also benefit from getting a teacher. If your in a school band this can be something extra you use as a study guide.

Lesson book
I understand that many instructors love this series, but I found ABCs of Violin a bit better for self study. The CDs are nice to hear what it is you are supposed to sound like and to play along with after you get the piece down. Do get both book 1 and 2 if this is the series you are going to use. Once you get going, it doesn’t take long to want more pieces to play that you like. I play every piece in the book, but I play the pieces I like much more often for practice. If you push yourself you can get through book 1 and 2 in less than 2 months. Do get the books with both the CD and DVDs, they are a big help.It may take hours of practice but when you start playing songs (pieces) you like it is a ball. I’m at 3 months now and am starting to learn Vivaldi’s Spring, and a number of Fiddle tunes. Bach’s Jesu (full solo version (advanced)) is still giving me fits, but I have just started learning second and third posistions.I find the advanced Fiddle books teach, or at least make you learn, double stops much more than many of the violin lesson books.Good luck and enjoy.

EElements is my favorite Violin book. I had studied using severals methods as Suzuki for example, that I found a little boring. But this book, and the EE series are just exclt. First the book are design for a easy comprehension and guide you in your day-to-day study. The CD is performed by a real orquestra, its an exception in the Hal Leonard books that are usually performance using synthesizer. The EE series for violin is very good option in your violin study. Totally recommended Much better that Suzuki

JUST THE SNARE AND BASS DRUMS
I know everyone says you should start here when learning to play drums. I’m not so sure. This book seems to have been written in 1987 for a kid in a marching band who has a music teacher working with him. I’m trying to learn my way around my new drum kit, but this book has nothing about coordination or technique with toms or cymbals. There seems to be almost no explanation at all of what’s going on – just a few pages of reference material then endless pages of sheet music to play the snare and bass drums with increasing complexity. I’m following the book, but without other resources like a real instructor and YouTube channels, this book won’t be much help. In fairness, it was written at a time well before people attempted to become self-taught at anything.

A very good book for anyone taking drum lessons with a teacher.
For the last 8 years my passion for music has grown so much that I have learned how to play (at least to some degree) numerous musical (Ukulele, Harmonica, Recorder, Flute, American drumming and hand drums, and many other percussion) instruments. Over the years I have taken many courses and purchased numerous books to improve my skill level.I just purchased this wonderful 80 page manual (Alfred’s drum Method book 1 by Sandy Feldstein and Dave Black) which is organized into 39 drum playing lessons. The introductory part of this volume covers the snare drum, getting ready to play, the bass drum, the cymbals and elements of music. The lessons cover a wide range of drum practice lessons but without a drum playing teacher it will not be easy to follow some of the material. They do have a Drum DVD available for purchase which no doubt will help in learning the lessons in the manual. If you are taking drum lessons this book will enhance your drum learning sessions.Rating: 4 Stars. Good practice drum and music for beginners
My son can play most of the music he started drumming last year. He likes it and took it home to practice where his mom has a snare and high hat in the garage so I’d say he enjoys it more easily than a big set at times.

I use this book often
This is a great book for beginners to intermediate drummers. I use it with my students often. It does jump a litlle bit without explaing some of the notation changes, but overall, it’s still a great resource

Get it, and don’t call me Sandy.
Alfred is my best friend. That’s truth. I only wish I could Alfred in person, but I have recently discovered that Alfred is no longer with us. He apparently was a man named Sandy. I suppose I would forgo using my real name when writing a book about drum methods. “Sandy’s Drum Method”…. nope, it just doesn’t have the right sound (get it? .. right sound?)Anyway, the book is great for those wanting to learn the basics of reading snare drum sheet music. It won’t make you a master of the drum, but it is a step in the right direction. If you have a yearning to learn drumming, or just want to know why some music notes look so very weird, this book will help you in either case.

Great beginner’s book
A drumming teacher asked that we purchase this book. We have been using it for about 5 months.Like other Alfred books, the quality of the book is excellent. Staffs and notes are easy to read. The paper is thick and the book stays open well on a stand. We have packed it in suitcase and brought it with us on vacation to practice, and it holds up well. The lessons progress on a logical pace and is just right for the beginner. Sometimes our kids get frustrated easily. With this book, they are making progress and learning about rhythm very easily (there’s still griping about practice, trust me); it makes learning more fun. We practice one page daily and it takes about 20 minutes to do it a few times. Would definitely recommend it.

right book, reasonable price
My child’s teacher recommended this book, and it helps him play his glockenspiel, even though the book is about drums. I hope it does help him learn his chops!

Drummer Songbook
Purchased the songbook for my son who recently particpated in the Indiana State School Music Association – ISSMA comprtition. We saw two other drummers with the same book. My son has been playing just over a year and the Solo #10 he played was challenging and well received by the judge. The songbook was delivered on time and undamaged. I would recommend this song book to other drummers.

One of the best of over 50 available snare drum books
I’ve examined over 50 books on snare drum instruction and this is one of the top two. (Drum Method by William Schinstine & Fred Hoey is the other.) Good modern quality and sequence of material. 39 lessons and 23 solos. 2-line combination studies for each lesson (good for duets). Counts and sticking indicated in light gray. Nice illustrations for each new rudiment. Roll is introduced in Lesson 17, 5-stroke in Lesson 18, 9-stroke in Lesson 19, 13- and 17-stroke in Lesson 20, flam Lesson 27, drag in Lesson 34, ruff in Lesson 35. Minor nitpick is that you need to skip around to get rudiments in a better order. Also, it’s missing the single stroke rolls and paradiddles! Brief bass drum and cymbal technique. Great value for the money.

Great book
I’m no Neil Peart but this is a great resource for any beginning drummer. I would love to share with you how much I love the Artisanal cover or the feel of the Gluten Free ink on my hands or how this book improved my dating life but I want to be honest. This is just a good book.

Basic book
My son has used similar drum books in the past. This is the book his teacher requested. My son says that it is very basic, so if you are looking for basic then this is a good book. However my son has been playing for a few years now and is bored with this book, so I don’t recommend it for experienced drummers.

Wasn’t brand new
The book was clearly used someone’s name was crossed off and there was a sticker over the bar code which I had to peel off so my son could enter the code on the website for virtual school

Good starter book
I’ve given drum lessons with various lesson books. This one is highly recommended. It has a lesson for each element so that beginners understand the element well before moving on. It doesn’t go too fast for beginners. I’m using this now for two new beginner drummers and it is ideal for them.

Drum like a Pro
This is the book my 9 year old’s drum instructor told us to get. Very easy to follow. Breaks down everything nicely. Has really good combinations to practice. With regular practice of the essential drills from this book she’ll be ready to drum anything.

Kudos for such a good entry level book
This beginner’s book is just what my oldest grandchild needed. I am teaching him not only to play the drums, but read the drum score. This will be quite helpful, and he is already getting into it. Kudos for such a good entry level book!

Good resource for homeschool music class
Easy to understand for the most part. Using this book as part of homeschool curriculum to teach my 9yr old son. With a little guidance from my college son who used this same book in elementary public school, my 9yr old is learning well! Alfred’s books are a great music resource for beginners on up!

Small Notation
Text and notation is way too small. Some explinations of notation in the Combination Excercises is missing.

Great starter book for snare drum lessons
It’s a classic. I appreciate that the book is slow and methodical (great for elementary school kids), and that they emphasize the counting of the beats/subdivisions. It is also written by percussionists (vs. other methods like “Essential Elements” — terrible organization for percussionists, although it’s good for the winds and brass) which I appreciate.

Super duper standard
I’ve used this book for years with many students. Now my own daughter is using it, too. Progression is a little fast ….wish there were more exercises before the concept moves on but still, a great text!

Great way to start
I bought this book to teach my 7 year old Grandson how to play. You can’t go wrong with Alfred’s methods for any instrument. The basics are explained easily and each lesson builds upon the other. You won’t regret playing the drums and learning how to play correctly.

Love it. Great pacing and variety to keep students from getting bored. The solos mixed in with the repetition studies break up the monotony and keep the students thinking.
