Highly recommend this method
My son has studied guitar for the past 3 years. He finds the Alfred’s Basic Method challenges him and allows him to progress in his playing.. The level 2 book continues to introduce new notes, chords and scales. There are solos, duets and accompaniments. Alfred is noted for being a fast paced and complete teaching method. I would have to agree with that assessment. My son started playing young so his teacher started with 2 more basic methods. This method continues to challenge my son and move him forward in his guitar playing ability.

Serious Learning Only
I am relearning the Guitar after a 30 year break. I worked through the first book in this series and am now on the second. 30 years ago I didn’t pay much attention to learning the actual music I just memorized chords and played by ear. These books are excellent for learning all aspects of the method of playing guitar. It is a slower and harder process than just learning Guitar Tab but it is worth it if you have the time. I am actually doing both and I find that what I have picked up in the Alfred’s book helps incredibly even when playing from Tab.

Great if you are able to read sheet music
I would simply advise people 1) Be careful with your clicks 2) Make a copy of your order at checkout. I was going to purchase Alfred’s Book 1 because I’m a complete newbie to guitar. The “bundled offer” included a Book 2 and a Book 1 & 2. Wow, two volumes in one, a no-brainer right? So that’s what I thought I ‘clicked’ to put in my cart. Yesterday I received Book 2 which is basically a book of sheet music with minimal instructions. A perfectly good book for people who knows how to read music, but not much use to someone lacking basic skills. The book arrived in perfect condition and of acceptable quality for the low cost.

Alfred’s is a great way to learn
I have enjoyed using this method for learning guitar. It would be best to have a teacher, however I don’t have the schedule to allow learning at a set time. With Alfred’s books I have been able to slowly but surely progress on my own.

This is a great book. I’ve used it with many students
This is a great book. I’ve used it with many students; however, this appears to be a cheap reproduction. The stickers on the back are pictures of stickers. The cover is not glossy like the original and the inside is all black and white with no color. Another student who ordered one for herself through Amazon got the same fake.

Challenging experience
I bought this book recommendation of my daughter’s guitar teacher. She is starting her fourth year of private guitar lessons (she’s 11) and has gone through the three youth manuals that were available. We got this one just before she left for summer vacation so she’d have something new to work on before she came back to lessons in the fall. Working through it on her own was definitely a challenge for her (she had difficulties playing with the CD, mainly because she couldn’t keep up and she was confused since some tracks have multiple parts being played and she didn’t realize she was only supposed to be playing one of them – she did not have a chance to see her teacher for any instruction after the book arrived) but she made great progress with it on her own during the summer. Upon her return, her teacher explained to her how to use the book along with the CD and she’s made great progress. It has helped her work on all facets of her playing – chords, rhythm, scales, melody, etc.

good basic method
I have already used book 1, but I find some directions a little difficult to understand in book 2. For instance, it is not always clear which part is to be played by the teacher, and which part is to be performed by the student.

Consigliatissimo

Ok.
Simple to follow, makes learning tab or music reading very simple.
Steve C –
Not much choice, so this is good enough to build a basic developmental path.
There aren’t any ‘bibles’ for students of the electric bass as there are, for example, for trombone or trumpet. This isn’t a bible and will never become so revered, but it’s decent enough. There is insufficient attention to building a clean sound and in book 1, at least, a lot of the material is on open strings without any attention to sustain and other strings’ harmonics. As one of the only ones out there, though, it’s not terrible.

Bass method

got this for a great price so my review is coloured by that
got this for a great price so my review is coloured by that. Seems pretty comprehensive, like the guitar volume this one mostly uses notation rather than tabs which means the progress can be slow if you’re a beginner and just learning to read music. Other than that, good. Like the guitar volume this one has some pretty cheesy song choices. Would be more inspiring to include some better, more popular songs. If you’re a beginner like me, fun is a very important part of the learning process.

Stunning learning resource
Having been trying to learn to play bass for over six months and making slow but steady progress I’ve been amazed at how much this book (the complete edition) has propelled my learning. It’s SO intuitive and easy to follow, I feel that I’ve come on leaps and bounds since picking it up, not only with my understanding and technique but also with reading bass clef, an added bonus I didn’t even think about when purchasing this.Don’t delay, what incredible value if you’re committed to learning to play this instrument!

One version has CD and one does not
Be careful when choosing this book. There are two listings at two different prices. I chose the cheapest of the two (who wouldn’t?). But the cheaper version comes without the CD. The only indication in the listings is by looking at the image of the front cover.

Libro molto utile e graduale.
Il libro è perfetto per chi vuole approcciarsi gradualmente alla lettura. Ci sono gli esercizi preparatori per poter cominciare a leggere le note su ogni corda, nei primi tre tasti. Secondo me è molto utile. L’ho faccio comprare ad ogni mio allievo.

Does not come with CDs
This 3-book-in-one-spiral does NOT come with CDs, or with a link to the Hal Leonard site, where one could find the backing tracks. It is basically useless. This version should not even be sold. Selling it to save a bit of money does not help if the product at any price is basically useless. On a more positive note, I did find YouTubes with the backing tracks for each book; however, HL promised to sic their copyright attornies on the site. Go figure.

the book is very good as other reviewers say. ut i didn’t realize that this edition does not give access to the audio tracks, and the doesn’t list the track number that corresponds to each exercise or song.

Excellent Electric Bass Instructional Method
I have used this book successfully to help beginners become proficient playing the electric bass. It is bound with a plastic comb for easy handling of the pages when playing from the book.Book One covers the first five frets (positions), sight-reading, common bass lines, patterns and rhythms. It studies more than 100 songs, riffs and provides clear examples to assist the student complete any assignment at home.Book Two covers the box shape and how to move across the fingerboard, notes on the fifth position, the fundamentals of the major and minor scale, traditional blues lines and shuffle rhtyhm, as well as an introduction to reading tablature.Book Three covers more songs, riffs and other examples, sixteenth notes, chord symbols, hammer ons & pull offs, other styles and patterns.Eric Friedman does a thorough job with this instructional series.

Great product.
This is a great starter book for bass players. A lot of information and techniques to learn. If you don’t try to get through this book to fast and really focus on the first part of the book slowly and patiently in a couple of months with daily practice, the next parts of the book will increase you playing.

Doesn’t Include Tabs
This (aside from a few minor sections) is only sheet music, with no tabs. This probably makes you a better musician overall, but isn’t user friendly for more casual learners.
Zack Huxel –
Perfect stepping stone
This is a great start to getting familiar with that bass you bought weeks or months ago and is gathering dust in the corner. While I found the learning of sheet music less than necessary (you’ll almost certainly use tabs anyway), the descriptions of form and the introduction to chords is essential.
