Probably best used with instructor, but can also teach yourself with it
My daughter has been using the Hal Leonard Guitar Method books (she’s on #3 now) in conjunction with regular in person lessons. I’m toddling along behind her now, using them on my own. Obviously regular practice is what makes the most difference, but the book walks you through the basics clearly, helps you build strength and dexterity at a reasonable pace, and is easy to use. Would recommend it if you’re not starting from “0” in terms of your music knowledge or if using them in conjunction with regular lessons from a teacher.

Good book
I got this book for my 13 year old daughter because she is trying to teach herself the guitar, but only 1 hour she got it she came to me saying she was very confused and she was only on the 4th page, this is a nice learning book overall but I wouldn’t recommend it for younger kids or teenagers who dont already have a little bit of knowledge on how to play the guitar

One of the better beginner guitar books.
I have been a guitar player-teacher for over 60 years. In the old days we had students struggle through antiquated beginner books. Then came the Alfred method that we used for many years until Hal Leonard came out with this one. Students seem to make good progress using this well laid out book. Highly recommended with or without a teacher. The pages are laid out in good order with new skills presented then a page of two of reinforcing exercises. Remember if you try to teach yourself your teacher will not knowany more than you do. Find a good teacher!

Teacher’s Favorite Teaching Tool
.I’ve used several methods for teaching beginning guitarists and I like this Hal Leonard Book 1 the best. The print is big and clear. I like that it begins with teaching the individual notes showing them both on the scale and on the guitar.

I bought this because I want to work somewhere that uses it
The chord chart is at the back of the book by the way. This book is based around the idea that you are learning while having someone teach you, which is okay for the purpose I needed, but I don’t agree with material designed like that specifically for “beginners”. If you’re going to buy a book as a beginner, you are probably looking to learn on your own. If you are buying a book where it is only most useful if you have a teacher, you are probably a teacher.

Good Start–individual notes as well as beginner chords
I actually bought this book because it helps teach the individual notes as well as chords. Eventually, the path between classical guitar and pop (or rock) Rhythm, or lead, this book is a good start.

Quick and easy results
I’ve seen several books, but this one is easy to follow and learn the notes quickly. I love how they do one string at a time, so that it builds your confidence. Also, watching my daughter bloom has been most satisfying to watch.

Really good book
Really good book. I like the provided music in it and the range of difficultly levels of the pieces. I taught myself with it. I have a music background and play the flute so it was easy to understand the theory of it. That may be the only issue for others but you will catch on or not play.

Great book for a beginner. I am using it to teach two people how to play the guitar and it is flexible enough to accommodate different skill levels as well as has a nice flow to the increasing level of complexity.

Not my top pick
I was looking for a book to use for middle school, guitar class. I decided not to use this one, after checking out about 4-5 guitar methods. The kids version of this one has many more popular songs int it and I am keeping that, but in the end, I ended up going with the Ernie Ball method. I liked that one because it is broken down very simply, has larger print, is easy to read, and includes better site reading practice, also, it has more tabs, and breaks down nicely.

Easy to follow and to use. My 8 year old daughter’s teacher recommended this book for her to use s a practice guide at home. Because she is young, I do need to help her read through the exercises. This was easy to do even though I do not have any guitar playing experience or ability.

It could teach on a more basic level. It skips over basic symbols and terms a beginner does not know and then doesn’t introduce them and expects a student to somehow know. A beginning student doesn’t even know the definition of a note.

This is the book which I have been seeking. It is very similar to the one I used when I took lessons as a child. If you are looking for a good basic beginners book this one is highly recommended. It will not make you a rock/country or Christian recording artist overnight, it will give you a firm foundation for reading notes and learning the strings.

Excellent book. Kinda nice that they teach you the …
Excellent book. Kinda nice that they teach you the notes on a string one at a time. However right after you learn the 4th string it skips to a couple chords and then resumes to learning the 5th string about 10 pages later. Just make sure you use the table of contents. You need to skip around at times for a more logical flow. Also, it would be nice if scales were in the book which incorperated what you learned thus far. I got these from my guitar teacher. I feel the book is really good but it is missing just a little something. I would still recommend it over other books I have seen.

No tabs, goes straight to staff notation
I didn’t do the “peek inside”; too bad for me. This book teaches you the staff notation (aka reading music). The problem is, the tab notation (which this book doesn’t use) is so much easier for a new guitarist to learn and be able to play something.Sure, being able to read music is all good and everything, but it can also be a turn-off for kids who are just starting out. I think tabs and guitar go together really well for a beginner.

I’ve been teaching guitar for about 8 years now. This was the first book I used for my students and I’ve stuck with it for all these years. The book has a good method for teaching the student to read music, the songs are good and the cds add another demension to the lessons, asa whole. I only wish book one got into chords a little more in-depth but I have found a way around that issue.

a good continuation of Book 1
This book continues from Book 1. Has notes and chords and discusses some of the music theory such as root notes for chords etc. This is for learning music notes and not for Tab. But learning the primary chords by name, such as C, E or G7, is very valuable. Even if you don’t want to learn all the indiv notes. Learning the chords by name is easier to play than by tab even.

A mixture of strumming and notation exercises
The learning purpose of the book could be more clearly defined. Book 1 was designed to help students read music. Book 2 alternates strumming exercises with reading, which could either be desirable or undesirable based on your goals. If your goal is to read music, you are going to have a drastic jump in symbol decoding for music notation fromThe first book and you will need more reading supplements. Students struggle a lot with this book

They do not include the pattern exercises so that a beginner could hear what something sounds like and repeat it
My biggest problem with the books is that the CD only includes certain tracks. They do not include the pattern exercises so that a beginner could hear what something sounds like and repeat it. Obviously there are hundreds of those in the book, but it would still be helpful to have access to it so I know if I’m doing it right or not.

Good, but considerably harder than book 1
Good book, except Hal Leonard makes a big jump from book 1 to book 2 intellectually. Kind of like going from Elementary School right to High School. Maybe this is because book 1 is typically easier than other Guitar 1 methods from other book companies. it’s definitely the right choice after Hal Leonard 1 (Hal Leonard is an easier system than Mel Bay and some others). Really surprised Hal Leonard hasn’t covered power chords and a warm-up exercise up to this point?

fun to jam!
I really like using this book alongside of Mel Bay Book 2. The combination of the two books gives students a great foundation for playing the guitar. This book offers some outstanding practice with strumming patterns. The CD is a must if the student is to really get a feel for playing the style and playing with others. So often students who play guitar don’t getting a chance to play with a group. This CD gives the student this opportunity in addition to making playing the guitar a blast! I have taught many students over the years and have found this book to be extremely popular and well worth the money.

Simply Excellent!
I tried a few different guitar method books in teaching my son to play – everyone get you through the notes on the six strings and then dumps you in the middle of no-where.After a few false starts with other methods I found the Hal Leonard Guitar Method books and I absolutely love them. They are the best by far and we’ve been very please with them. I play a bit of guitar but never had formal instruction. These books served as my “lesson plans” for teaching my son and it works! We’ve gone through all three (Book 1, 2 & 3) and then started working with a few specialized/focused books (Blues guitar, Rock guitar, Guitar Theory, etc.). They all move at a good comfortable pace and leverage exercises that build and reinforce the concepts being taught. If you’re thinking about learning to play or teaching your children to play, this book is a great investment.

There’s no question that you can learn to play guitar with this method, but you’re not likely to enjoy the songs. Polly Wolly Doodle, Sinner Man, Frere Jacques, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desire, Kumbayah? I am 60 years old and these songs are too outdated and religious for me. I can’t imagine youngsters enjoying them.

Use for repetoire, don’t use for learning
I’m a guitar teacher, so my review is biased towards music education. My view of this book is that it has good content – if you can already play some guitar and want to quickly expand your repertoire, this book fits the bill. It has a lot of great and recognizable riffs, and you’re likely to find something in here that you don’t already know and can learn quickly to add to your personal catalog. (Note, many of the “songs” are really just a couple of bars with the main riff, but it’s a good starting point to find songs you’d like to learn.) I use many of these riffs in my lessons. But, and this is a big but, the book leaves a lot to be desired as a “method”. It shows you how to play some things, but addresses virtually none of the why. This stems from – you guessed it – not teaching music, but teaching tabs instead. This leaves the depth of music in this book only surface deep – it’s like learning to read a book out loud, but not understanding what any of the words actually mean. So, I’m going to split the bill and give it 3 stars. If you are an intermediate or better guitar player, you will likely find some useful things in here and can use this book to teach yourself repertoire. But if you are a beginner, do yourself a favor and don’t start here – get yourself a book with an actual music method (I like Hal Leonard’s regular guitar method book) and a good teacher to go through it with. Learning to read music is an invaluable skill to have, and will lend itself to understanding what it is that you’re actually playing.

this is good for the BEGINNER beginner
This was good for me when I knew absolutely nothing about the guitar. Very short snippets to play and you can hear how it is supposed to sound w the tracks online but these snippets are so well known, you won’t need it

Fun
This book is a lot of fun to go through. I will admit however, it is not a part of my daily practice routine, but more a part of when I want to just get on the guitar and noodle. It has a lot of short riffs to it that are fairly simple, even for a beginner. For the price of the book, I definitely recommend it.

Kindle Version has broken multimedia – But the content is good !
Really good book BUT! Once I began reading it none of the audio clips would play in my Kindle apps. Not the Android, not the PC version. The audio clips worked fine when I was looking at the book sample before I purchased.Back to the content… Other than the audio clips not working for me… the rest of the content seems to be really good. Three Stars for the bad audio clips.

Different from other HL guitar books!
This book takes the beginner approach from their other books and turns it upside down. The “riffs” all start from the lowE string vs starting on the high E. The riffs are easy and mostly well known and fun for the student. The only problem is that they only learn the riffs and not the whole song. The images are all in “tab” orientation and look upside down in the book.

Tab Method Warning!
Get this. Better on computer or iPad as the music is embedded. If not the included CD has it all. Great way to learn and to learn short riffs. This should be a book anyone starting to play should get. The warning is you’ll wind up buying them all. :-)Fun way to learn.

Recensione Hal Leonard Guitar Tab Method Book One
The author takes us by the hand and guides us step by step through the fantastic world of music, in this case specifically centered on the instrument that, more or less, we all have, at least once, tried to play the guitar!Just an excellent job that the author did in preparing this manual. Inside, many tips, explanations and practical explanations on how to get started, well presented even for a neophyte like me. I was afraid in too difficult a reading and that it would discourage me, but the guide is gradual and helps to make progress starting from the basics. There are tips on how to choose the guitar, what it is made of, how to tune it, the posture to use while playing, scales, chords, etc … It also suggests some techniques for playing without a pick, to embellish the songs, to improvise, in short, a small bible to devour !!!!

Item in worse condition than described
The cost of the book was almost the cost of a new book. It was described as in fair or good condition. But the workbook is almost completely filled with pencil markings. For the price point that I paid I would accept a few pages with minor marking. Quite disappointed to have to purchase another copy.

These are the best books by far to teach with
These are the best books by far to teach with. Amazingly, I actually use the THEORY book for my adults (along with the adult-all-in-one course book) if they have no musical background because it slows down the theory so they can really understand it without feeling overwhelmed. It has really helped them and follows along with the adult book very well.

It is all coming back to me
I couldn’t remember a thing about music theory when I purchased my digital piano. I bought a few different music books but this was perfect. Took me through all the basics which I had forgotten. Easy to follow. The whole series is meant to be used with a piano teacher which is why I rated one of the other books a bit lower, but this still served its purpose.

This is a great course for an older DIY learner. The videos are very useful, and the background music is much better to practice with than a metronome. Highly recommend.

Great for adult beginners!
The Faber Accelerated books for Older learners are wonderful. The pace is fast enough to be interesting for someone like me, who listens to a lot of classical and jazz music. The song selections are pretty, sometimes even beautiful — rare in a book for beginners.

Good book
The first level was below my playing experience but I followed along anyway and it helped with my timing so I’m glad I did it. The format of the book is pretty nice. The page your on tells you which page to play in the practice book which I thought was a really nice touch. Great format, easy to follow along with And interesting songs. I ordered the rest of the levels!
