Excellent blueprint, here are some tips…
This is not a “so you want to rock” book you find at the music store chain, this is to drumming what sanding and joinery is to a woodworker. Anybody that calls themselves a drummer has this hurdle to climb, a must for a serious drummer. My 1st teacher gave me this and “Stick Control” in the 1981 when I started taking drum lessons. I wasn’t sure why I was learning to swing when the trend was rock, but I soon found myself deconstructing every song into these patterns. This book is written in jazz notation, meaning that it does not include the ride cymbal and hi-hat patterns in every bar. You should be able to play all of these patterns with a swing ride (dotted eight note) and the hit-hat on 2 and four. It sounds easy, but playing straight 8th or 16th notes on the left hand while swinging in triplet time on the right can really be frustrating. Make sure to reverse your hands after you’ve mastered your dominant technique, this breaks the limb dependance. My teacher told me that I should be relaxed enough to be able to play all of these patterns and recite the gettysburg address at the same time. This book unravels rhythm in a way that has been duplicated, but never matched over the years.

Ted Reed – Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer [Paperback]
Great Book.MANY MANY Professional SESSION drummers have worked out of this book, and teach from it as well.Page 38This page most session guys know by heart. Just take a lesson from one and ask them about it. Theyll play it off of the top of their head.OK – why is this book great?First: It very much gives you Jazz phrasing / rhythms in a nut shell. These rhythmic figures are very Jazz language based / representative. There are MANY ways to use these rhythms – you need a GOOD teacher to show you how. There is so much to apply this to, it just goes on and on.Buy this book and The Drummer’s Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson. Alans book goes into detail on the MANY ways to use Ted Reeds syncopation.Ask any professional Jazz drummer, and theyll say the same (OR MAYBE) they WONT until YOU PAY THEM FOR A PRIVATE LESSON. Well, now you know for free. Go knock yourself out and woodshed. When it pays off thank me for this review.best of luck, have fun with it.

One of the best
I started using this book when I first took lessons about 45 years ago and after 2 years of lessons I got tired of reading and just wanted to play by ear which I have done on and off ever since. About a year or so ago I decided to start learning how to read again and started taking lessons to do so. We use a variety of different books and when I am having trouble playing something I find that I will constantly come back to this book to practice the exercises that pertain to the problems I am having. I probably refer back to this book more than any other book I have and I think it is great for any level of skill or ability that you have. I regret not keeping up on reading like I should have years ago but it’s never too late to continue to learn and I highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning or who has been playing for years. It’s only 8 bucks!

I bought this copy of the book as a gift to a friend who is interested in percussion playing and he is getting great use out of
My first copy of this book dates back to 1978. I’ve been playing drums for 36 years and still find this book helpful. The book contains the basics, but it is incredibly versitile and limited only by your imagination. One can take the patterns and split them up between different limbs. The book can be used as snare drums parts over a jazz feel beat. You can take some of the patterns and play them on the bell of the cymbal while playing a samba beat. You can use the patterns as drum fills at varying speeds, drums and styles. I reccomend this book to both the beginner and expert drum players. I bought this copy of the book as a gift to a friend who is interested in percussion playing and he is getting great use out of the book.

Indispensable
The thing I love about good drumming instructional books is they never go obsolete and are always adaptable to different systems and methods of teaching. For example one can play through the book using Moeller strokes or orchestrate the exercises around the kit to make the manual endlessly helpful.

An essential addition to the drummer’s “biblical” cannon.
Reed’s Syncopation is an endlessly challenging method book. It teaches control of time, feel and dynamics. It is especially useful for drummers who can use the various syncopated figures to play “against” ostinato rhythms.Other musicians can also benefit from the contents of this text. Although percussion notation (e.g. snare drum note heads in the “c”space) is used throughout the book, any player can adapt the figures to their own instrument, e.g. interpreting the rhythms as progressions within a scale or mode.Another aspect of this book is its suitability for all levels of players. Beginners will appreciate its “progressive” difficulty (easy to challenging) and more advanced players will see endless possibilities for rhythmic adventures.Beginners should use this book with a competent teacher, as it is easy to imagine that there is not much going on with each example.Highly recommended.

All music students could benefit from this book.
I am currently using this book to teach my son basic drumming with a roland practice pad. It has been a fantastic help. This book would be helpful to any beginning student learning to read music, not just drummers, since it so clearly breaks down rhythmic notation. The exercise progressions make a lot of sense, and there are quarter note guides that align the drum notes relative to the downbeat, which is very helpful for learning syncopation.

The best, not 2nd best …
or maybe I’m being unfair … but I first used Syncopation back when I first took drum lessons (1965 or so) … and I remembered many of the instruction beats to the point where I entered my 4th or 5th childhood at age 52 and bought the book again (and there they were — 1 e & a, etc.). Between this and […] (nate brown, instructor), relearning to read and getting my chops back was a breeze (and nostalgic). If you’re thinking about drumming, you gotta have this … which is rated the 2nd best all-time book behind “stick control” … I never used stick control but will probably take a look-see down the road.

At first I didn’t understand how to use this book. Just glancing at the pages, I was like “why would anybody write a book like that? And why would anyone buy it?” Then a friend showed me how to use it – and later I immersed myself in the subculture of YouTube drummers who have developed endless ways to mash up these exercises. No drummer should be without this one.

Excellent book.
I got this for a drum studio class that am taking Arizona State University and so far my reading has been challenged. I personally would recommend this book if you plan to get into big band chart reading and sight reading. There are very helpful written charts that are most commonly seen in big band music and excellent exercises that you can use for left hand comping in swing music. Its a hard book to learn but this is going to jump your reading big time. Take your time with book, don’t rush through it. There are simple steps to take when approaching this book. So have fun and keep swinging. 🙂

Excellent, straightforward book on basic drum rhythms and note emphasis. An excellent book for all levels. Sometimes it’s forgotten that a drummers main purpose is to keep rythm, everything past there is important, but rhythm is its foundation. Reed’s book is perfect to set to a metronome and solidify your internal rhythm in context with a large amount of common drum patterns Ii.e. (eighths, triplets, sixteenths, etc.)Syncopation is an essential book to add to any drummers library. Five stars, highly recommend.

Get syncopated!
The word syncopation is often misunderstood and misused. This book is a great addition to Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone in developing right/ left coordination with accents. Work it work it work it. You’ll be glad you did. I had both these books in my formative years and I revisit them to keep loose and precise. I’m convinced both of these books helped with developing my chops and ability to recognize patterns which made learning songs much faster and easier. Get it, work it!

EVERY SERIOUS MUSICIAN SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK
Upon receiving this book, it was in mint condition and the packaging was of good quality as well. I bought this book because as a musician, I know you can’t get far without really knowing your scales and theory just like you probably won’t be good at, really, ANY genre without knowing about syncopation. Although the title is directed towards drummers, anyone who plays ANY instrument should invest in this book. It will not only help you as a performer, but also in terms of personal expression and comprehension.

Great skill development for drummers of all levels.
As an advanced beginner on the drum kit this book has helped tremendously in improving the basic coordination between my hands and feet.I started with the book 4-Way Coordination to try to get my limbs to work with each other. 4-Way Coordination is great but, at least for me, hard! Syncopation is more at my level. I work through both and recommend both.

A favorite old wine!
This book deals with syncopation and it starts with the basics to prepare you for the complex. This is a medicine you must take and master to play effectively. To some, some of these exercises may prove very challenging. However, you are determine to succeed because you have no choice. You want to be your best. It is elementary. It is needed to give breath to your performance. Again, a favorite well aged wine!

Great for a new percussionist or seasoned professional
This book and “Stick Control” are the backbone of rudiment books for percussionists. It is no less than essential that this book be used to learn or tune-up one’s understanding of accenting unexpected notes in percussion play. All of my comments in “Stick Control” apply here. Get this book and after you are have completed your first pass through this book there is no way you wont be a better drummer as a result of your work. Isn’t that what it all about.

Not Just for Drummers!!!
It’s a shame really that this book is titled “for the modern drummer”.Any musician that plays different rhythmic patterns (which is pretty much all of them) will benefit greatly from this book. All the lines are in 4/4 time with steady quarter notes shown marking the “beat”. So the exercises really consist of all the patterns shown on the top. It’s a simple enough concept, but he had the good sense to write it all out for the rest of us. All your basic patterns: quarter notes, dotted eighths, 16th’s, 16’s mixed with 8’s and all varied in order and with different rests so they come on different beats each time. As you progress through the book, the lines get more complicated and intricate until you get to the syncopated section.I remember this book from when I was a drummer in high school almost 30 years ago. Now I play rhythm guitar, and am looking to get away from the “standard” strumming patterns and get more creative. This book will help me do that. It will also help immensely with learning and playing leads and solos. It really doesn’t matter if you play drums, guitar, sax, keyboard, bass, or mandolin this book will help teach you to recognize and play rhythms – and that is a key part of sight-reading.I guess the TL:DR version would be: If you play a musical instrument, get this book. It will be the some of the best use of money and time you’ll ever spend.

Excellent book – interesting rhythms for beginners and intermediate players who read music
I am surprised to see comments about how this book isn’t for beginners. I’m very much a beginner (have only been playing a few months) and have loved it. There are a couple of things in here that are too hard for my current level, but don’t we all want to stretch? It has a decent range from very easy to quite a bit harder and plenty for the beginner. I wouldn’t buy it as a first drum book – but I did in fact buy it as my second. And, it’s great. t love that it challenges me and that there are things I will have to come back to when I become more knowledgeable. Additionally, the rhythms are more interesting and not as straight forward as most books that are appropriate for beginners. That’s a big plus in my book and it makes me want to practice more and longer. I agree that some of the handwritten notes are a little sloppy and inconsistent. This may sound weird, but I find that charming and an additional challenge. And, it adds to the beauty. It’s like the difference between hearing a live drummer and a drum machine.

So good i just had to review it!
If only i had found out about this book sooner! As a drum teacher for the past 12 years, i can easily say Syncopation by Ted Reed is the best most effective book to get beginners started with learning to read rhythms. Some of my students who at first had zero reading ability managed to sight read quarter notes all the way through different 16th note rhythms by the end of class, identifying all the different rests along the way while keeping a steady kick pulse underneath. All this thanks to how systematically the exercises are written out, getting more challenging as you progress through the pages. One step at a time, slowly but surely. Not just for beginner or intermediate drummers; i come back to this book just to brush up on my sight reading every once in awhile, or i’d pick some of the exercises out and use it as double pedal exercises or independence stuff like left foot clave, right/left hand ostinatos etc. A thousand different ways to use this wonderful book!

A necessary resource for any drummer
Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer should be required reading for any drummer, from the veteran looking to maintain their skills to the beginner looking for a good starting off point in percussion. This book does not teach basic technique, as in holding drumsticks or types of strokes, but it does present a lifelong regimen for establishing and maintaining performance. After receiving my shipment from Amazon I started from page 1 exercise 1 (a simple R L R L beat) playing for 20-30 minutes per day. These exercises, while playing along with my metronome, have already began to improve my sense of time, my internal count (“One and Two and Three and Four and”) and my basic technique.Eventually I will move on to Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer’s companion volume
Accents and Rebounds: For the Snare Drummer
to help round out my skills but for now I have months of exercises and a fine resource in Stick Control.

No accents?
Great for building skills, but no accents. I think many of these excercises would be greatly improved by accenting some of the notes. I often accent the first beat of each measure, then next time the second, then third… I gave it 4 stars, it would have been 5 with accents.

The first choice for developing your stick technique!!
This is THE book on stick-technique! If you’re gonna buy just one book to use for stick-practicing – this is it! Singles, doubles, combinations and even the buzzroll are all covered thoroughly. You don’t have to be a master-reader to understand the exercises. They are short, easy-read and still far from boring. The level of difficulty changes along with the speed you select on your metronome. In other words; you can buy this book and practice meaningfully with it for the rest of your drumming career. And that really says it all.”Stick Control” has been on the market for a very long time but is still hot and recommended by many of the drumming legends like, for example, Peter Erskine. You can use it even if you don’t have a drumset. All you need is a pair of sticks and a metronome (and preferably a practice pad).GREAT BOOK!!!

Love this book. It’s easy to follow. My drum teacher loves it too. He remembers using it when he was a kid. Great for practicing, for warm-ups, for hand coordination. It starts with easy exercises then gets more and more complicated. My teacher was able to help with the more difficult parts. The hardest part is discplining yourself to do the exercises. After giving up the search I bought the Kindle version and have really enjoyed having Stick Control handy no matter where I am (not that taking the paperback version was too difficult, but that might have led to the misplacement). Classic practice companion. No nonsense. A never ending source of practice and ideas.

Will Improve Your Technique
The book really expands your mind in terms of what and how you play drums. Some patterns are trickier that others. After a few days of dedication to the book, my playing improved a lot. Play against a metronome to a comfortable speed – take your time with it to really appreciate the essence of what the book teaches. So much to discover in this little treasure of pages.

In my opinion, the gold standard for developing technique
I own about 7 different drumming books and this one is by far the best I’ve ever owned. The author presents a system for training the muscles that is second to none. Drumming technique is all about muscle memory and comprehensive muscle memory training is all about teaching your brain patterns and mastering them one at a time. This book is immediately accessible for beginners. The exercises are deceptively simple and progress in a perfectly hierarchical manner. Each new exercise builds and expands upon the previous exercise which just enough of a twist to cause your brain to note and learn the distinction. This makes practice easy and progress quick.I don’t know whether it’s good or bad, but you can spend months (as I have) working on just the first page! Not because the exercises are tough, but because even the simplest of exercises takes time and devotion to master.I can think of no more important skills for a drummer to develop than timing accuracy and independence of limbs. If you purchase only one drumming book, and Stick Control is it, you’ll still have an extraordinary tool at your disposal.Follow the directions exactly – how you practice is as important as what you practice

INCREDIBLE BOOK
Hands down the best investment I have ever made. I’ve been playing drums for about 9 years and I have never been able to play so effortlessly. This book has a bunch of simple rudiments with alternate stickings to really build your dexterity and control with both hands. My left hand (I’m right handed) has always been very weak and I could never quite get the grip the same as my dominant hand. I’ve been using a metronome with the first page for about 3 days for a little over an hour each day and I’m already noticing significant improvement. I’ve tried to do excercises on my own to build strength but actually having the notes in front of me helped me to focus more and I am slowly but surely gaining control over my left hand and even more with my right too. I never write reviews on anything I purchase but I had to for this book because it’s amazing. Well worth the money!

Good book but do not buy used
This book is full of good exercises for stick control. However, the condition of the book was poor. I purchased a “like new” used version that was listed as “small damage on cover.” There are actually numerous areas of damage on the book and the most pronounced on the cover was so deep it went all the way through to the back cover. The pages are still usable, but all have some level of damage. Definitely would not have listed this as “like new” and would not have purchased had I known the extent of the damage.

This Book is a Classic
I started playing drums when I was 15 and I’m 76 now. This was the first book my drum teacher gave me. If you want to learn drumming the traditional way than this book will do that for you. The book may seem a little stiff with its exercises, but once you learn the exercise than you can put your own interpretation on it so it can fit you. I see the book as a foundation template for further exploration into the field of drumming as an art form. The book is good for a beginner or advanced student.

Will not help you learn to read music, but…
I like it and it will force me to learn to read music better. That said, don’t think this is going to teach you anything about reading music. Page one just starts in with the measures and notes, assuming you already know how to read music. Still, it is the standard for a reason and I’m glad I got it.

Stick Control for the Drummer
This is one of the essential books for serious drum practice. I do exercises out of it for 20 minutes at each practice session. I didn’t give it 5 stars because there are way too many exercises and little guidance about how to do them. Log on to YouTube, type in the search term ‘stick control’ and you will find videos from a number of drum instructors that show you how to get the best use out of this book.

Great learning tool.
What can I say about this? It has been around since 1932 and has been the staple for snare drummers. I hated it at first but it does teach you stick control and lead hand control. Very repetitive but that’s how you Develop muscle memory. Great book for learning it’s just very repetitive. My instructors been using it for over 20 years.

Drummers Bible – A MUST HAVE
As a drummer…please do not make the mistake I made. I knew about this book, but did not use it. Ten years later, I find myself in a situation where I am making a record…..and that my act will consist of being ambidextrous and playing drums both left and right handed. Hence – I have been doing the snare exercises in this fantastic and mystical book, really. You will not believe how good you will get when you go through this guy’s sticking patterns – and fast. My improvement in two months is epic! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – THIS IS THE DRUMMERS BIBLE – I MEAN THAT. READ IT DEEP – IT WILL UNLEASH MYSTERIES OF DRUMMING THAT YOU WILL LOVE! Every real drummer I have ever met will tell you a story about this book if they have been in the book!

Great for the rudiments but suggest one starts first with a competent and experienced instructor.
Love the exercises, but as someone who uses just practice pads and basically is learning sticks as a supplement to add another dimension in my drum circle, need to have someone show me closed, short rolls, etc as I can’t figure out a number of exercises and how they are played. However, what I have learned has given me some sound fundamentals, my hands getting faster as I couple this with some videos and other material. In essence get an instructor, and when up to speed, tackle this book and you will find it effective. Legendary writing in drumming as the preface and the quotes from many of one’s idols indicates. Well its now 2 years later since I wrote my review, and am taking half hour lessons via Zoom with an instructor for the last 8 months or so with stick and pad. Would have studio space for a kit but the pandemic has zapped that for now. He has clarified much for me and my technique continues to improve. A reviewer didn’t like that the book does not have accented exercises. For this my instructor has me working with the Ted Reed book one on Syncopation. There are wonderful accented exercises that can be quite challenging. Stick Control is still the core which should be in everyone’s collection.

Best drumming book by far
You know when you hear an amateur drummer who sounds clunky with bad timing, lacking finesse, and plays with tree trunk arms and stiff wrists? Yes we’ve all heard drummers like that. Well that was me until I got hold of this book.Within a month of solid (1 hour a day) practice of the first page I began to sound so much better. Of all the drumming books this one has had the greatest impact in my playing. Practicing from it is a bit like meditation – no obvious benefits from doing it – but then a couple of days later your drumming has changed in some incomprehensible way (for the better). The book will reveal your weaknesses and the endless pages of potential exercises means that you will have a lifetime of weaknesses to work on.You will get better and you do need to use this book if you take learning this instrument seriously. Definitely the best drumming book by far.

I didn’t want to like this
I bought this because it was recommended by several of the online drum teachers I follow.I had low expectations – it’s ancient, it’s for snare drumming, there’s a picture of a revolutionary war drummer on the cover for chrissakes. But, I started following the drills as instructed from page 1.Within a few days, my rolls, stick control and coordination had a demonstrable improvement.Within a few weeks, I realized I had gotten much better at reading music – even music for set drumming in other books.I limit myself to 45 minutes of practice with this every other day because I’m 52 and don’t want to create overuse injury since I’m just playing for fun.But it was well worth the price.

Where Greatness Begins
Don’t let the Minuteman drummer on the cover throw you. This isn’t just about marching band. This is exactly how you learn the snare. This perfect little book contains just what you need and nothing you don’t. There are no cute “comic book” style panels and no anthropomorphic eighth notes dressed as hip-hoppers, trying to make drumming “cool” to a bunch of iPhone-addled 21st century kids. Frankly, if your kids need that stuff to keep their attention, they either aren’t mentally ready to learn music or just aren’t interested. This is strictly a book of exercises that, if you take it seriously, will teach you more than a thousand amateur youtube videos could. Is it exciting? Not really. Can it get boring? Sure. The list of things that never get boring is awfully small. Is it repetitive? Absolutely, but that’s a good thing. The drum set, maybe more than any other instrument, is about about muscle memory and control. The great ones still practice the fundamentals. This book, an inexpensive metronome and an occasional lesson with someone who can help clean up your technique will get you on the road to drumming excellence. Master this book and you’ll have the foundation to go anywhere you want as a drummer.

Excellent book!
I’m a beginner, unfortunately without hours a day to dedicate to practice. I do like to sit down with my pad and some sticks whenever I get a chance though. That being said, this book is very easy to understand, with no super-technical text or music notation. It’s something anyone can pick up and start using right away.Coupled with my Korg MA-30 metronome, this book has helped me improve so much that I decided to keep a log of metronome speeds over the last few weeks. Every time I sit down to practice, I write down the metronome speed for each exercise that I can play at with no mistakes. I have gone up 10 beats per minute (as high as 14 on some simpler ones) over a few weeks, in just a few minutes a day! Well, it’s a lot for me :)The funny thing is, I haven’t even made it past the first page of exercises yet. For a beginner like me, they are difficult enough for now. When I get good enough at the first page, I’ll move on to the second, and so forth. This further cements the book’s value, there is enough material in here for a lifetime of learning, and if you’re already a pro, enough material to keep you conditioned.I’m still very slow but I can see benefit every day in both speed and timing. If you get this book and stay with it, I bet you will too. I recommend keeping a log so you can track your progress! Positive reinforcement will only make you want to practice more!

Great book for learning rudimental drumming
I used Stick Control when I was a kid learning rudimental snare drum to march drum corps. My instructor used this book and his instructor used this book as well. It is like an etude book for drummers and has the rudiment patterns in different forms to which in the long run if practiced diligently; slow and with pace, will condition the hands to remember rudiment patterns to the point in which one can play the patterns without thought; in the same way that the Arban etude book works for brass instruments and if such exercises are practiced in the same way. This book works as a good supplement to drum lessons, other books, or other things that a person is learning. I recommend this book be used with a teacher for further guidance (otherwise, some things may seem tedious). This is in all an old book, but still a good book and many drummers that I came in contact with from drum corps to professional drum set playing all used the etudes out of this book at some time or another and attest that this book helped with their drumming. Another book many drummers use along side this book would be “Accents and Rebounds” by George Lawrence (the same author of this book); again another book to use with a teacher along side this book.

I took a few brush up lessons in my late 40’s. The teacher was like “let’s go back to basics–let’s see how you do with Stick Control.” After running through the first couple of lines at first I thought, this seems silly, but then after a week I realized this book is great. I can’t believe I’ve had four drum teachers and only the fourth one told me about this. It should have been the first. All drummers need to know about this book.

Review For Stick Control
Back with an old friend! Started playing drums in 1962 at age 8 and started using Stick Control in 1965 at age 11. Turned pro in 1971 at 16 …..thanks in a big part to Stick Control!! My teacher for 8 years who was himself a published author of 15 books on the snare drum at school, was a good friend of George Stone back on the east coast in the 1920s and 30s. He got some first hand advice from Mr. Stone on how to study and use this book the best!! Would like to share the info here. Playing each two bar phrase 20 times each is Very Important!!! Study each exercise carefully BEFORE you even try to play it with sticks. Not only are the notes important but make sure you are playing the sticking (Right hand left hand) correctly. Go through it in your head FIRST….then start with your sticks slowly! Make sure it is right first. You have heard the saying “Practice makes perfect”….but really….”Perfect practice makes Perfect”!!! Slowly start to play each exercise faster. My teacher gave me six exercises each week along with using several other books. We went through one page each month….so it took four years to go through this book!!! I retired in the year 2000 from drumming after almost 40 years…as I had to concentrate on my “Day Gig”. I had loaned out my Stick Control to a student in 1999 and never got it back. I decided to buy a second copy and start practicing on a pad again just recently…..so this is my second go around with Stick Control after my first go around 55 years ago!!! But….great books only get better with age….you will get a great deal out of this book for years to come. My best wishes to you….and good luck in your practice!!!

A drummer for 50+ years and he LOVES IT!
My husband is a gifted, talented drummer that has been drumming professionally for 50 + years and could not read a NOTE of music! Hence, why I say gifted. He can listen and jump right in and play and not miss a Beat. Grandpa was a professional musician also. It’s in the blood LOL what can I say. now in our golden years he decided he wanted to learn how to read music. This book was a hit. He loves it and is learning a lot from it. Impresses me because a gifted talented drummer can even pick up a few tips. One hint he did give me was that this book would be good for someone who started drumming in a school band. Rudiments are the foundation and very important for drumming. They are a big asset. This book assist with teaching those skills.

This is the book you need to buy – jazz, rock, punk, it doesn’t matter
To a beginners surprise, this book will enhance your drumming skills. Make sure to read the directions because they give good advice, and to continually practice and you will see results. Personally, I typically play rock/punk music which makes it sound like this book wouldn’t be for me. But it’s for any drummer, and the sheets are well written and rise in difficulty at a great pace. There are two drum books that have helped me tremendously – this is one of them.

Great Practice Material!
At the beginning of this year (2014) I started practicing again and typed up my own basic practice routine which did not really work for me. I came across this book with alot of positive reviews and thought I would give it a try. So far I have been practicing for about 1 month for around 2 hours a day with hands and feet with a metronome. Once I get through the book, I am going to practice alternating between feet and hands (replace R hand with foot or L hand with foot etc). I focus on my grip also gripping the sticks with the pad of your fingers instead of a full grip. I can truly say that I can tell a big difference in my technique, control, and with the two combined, speed! Definitely worth the buy for any level of drumming if you use it!

Put In The Work
When I don’t know what to practice or lack motivation I only have to put in some reps with my Stick Control to make gains in stick control and develop tempo. It is as dynamic as you are creative. As with any drumming book, exercises can be expanded across the four limbs and orchestrated around the whole drum set.

Great content, but stored as a series of images
The content is an excellent set of exercises for both new and experienced drummers. The format, however, is a series of (high-quality) scans of the print edition, which means if you’re viewing it on a tablet or other Kindle reader, you have to treat each page as an image and zoom into the section you want to work on. This makes switching from page to page more than a little bit of a pain. In this case, it’s sheet music, so I can kind of see the need for handling it the way that was provided. Still, there are modern music fonts in Unicode that are up for the task of rendering the content as text. Doing so would also reduce the size of the e-book considerably.

It was the best of books, it was the worst of books!
As anyone who’s used it knows, this book can be somewhat dry and, after many, many hours of practice, it can become an object of hate just like an old High School Chemistry textbook. However, there is a reason that it is the “industry standard” and that is because the exercises within it will make you a better drummer, with the application of perseverance. It is suitable for all levels, including the complete beginner, providing you can understand and follow the notation. This is the third copy of this book that I have purchased as it remains a relevant tool ……….. the other two copies were burnt after graduation!!

Easy to follow but challenging enough. Can pace yourself or speed up also.
I’m just learning…starting out on drums and this has been the easiest practice book to follow. It helps you be more comfortable and natural with stick control and beats. I don’t read music very good so this is very clear to read. It’s for snare drumming whether loud or soft but the rest of the drums could easily be incorporated with filling in the rhythm. It’s helped me to actually produce drum rolls with timing. Works with metronome or without. Really get a lot out of this for beginning practice. It’s about 60 pages long and is size of say sheet music..regular copy paper dimension. Paper back so easy to prop up on music stand.

Best book for beginners with old time ethic.
This is a very comprehensive intro to the guitar. If one were to buy only one book to begin this should be the one. I have gifted it to two others already who were just beginning. For those who do not already read music, this will get them up to primary speed easily. If one were to simply follow this instruction and remain OFF YouTube, they would become proficient. The YouTube gig only complicates the process as well as displays many bad options. Just get a private quiet place and work through it. There is no shortcut, no play in 5 minutes. Just get over it and LEARN it properly. Without that ideal as a guide you will simply have a guitar in the closet somewhere soon. Without the old time ethic of simply settling in to actually learn something students will always give up and drift away from the goal.

Must have book for beginners to learn how to read sheet music. Beware, though, that this version does not have the accompanying audio files which makes things less useful since you can’t see how something is played, particularly for the more obscure tunes. Overall, would buy again if I lost it, it I’d get the one that has the audio files.

Not a bad start
This is more for a begginer however its lessons do go from very begginers to the experts. In the start it does tell you how a scale is formatted and notes are counted, does spend time teaching you to read them. However thats what I wanted, yes I know the scale (I played clarinet in school) yes I know how to read notes. I also didn’t know how to play a C on a guitar. This is not really for someone who wants to just play songs on this is more for someone who wants to learn a wide verity of songs, from country to rock, classical to metal. If you want to specialize in one maybe this book isn’t for you. However I like this book because its not just a tab book of here is Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” (its playing on the TV at this time) or whatever song you may want to play.

Warning – this does NOT come with access to the audio files
Pay attention to which of these you are buying. I didn’t as I assumed they all came with audio access. If the particular version you are purchasing does not specifically state audio access you will not be able to access the online audio files to play along with.Lesson format seems solid – unfortunately I’ll be purchasing a second copy so I have online access.

Received promptly and without product bloat.
I hate going to music stores: limited choices, inflated prices on materials written decades ago, trying to find options sourced from other stores… Modern music outlets just suck. The fact that I can buy the same book online, minus the triple inflated price point because of DRM coded audio books included, is amazing. Wife and sister-in-law will love using this to learn and for me to brush up on my music reading skills that are lacking.

Good for my kid
This book was recommended by my 8 yr old’s guitar teacher. She can easily follow this book and learn guitar from it. She is always studying ahead of what her teacher assigns so I like that it is easy for her to go through.

Hal Leonard’s marketing sucks – Buy books from fundamental changes instead
So here’s the deal I got exactly what I ordered. There are two versions of the book. One is about 10 bucks more and under the “guitar method” on the front cover, top left, there is (in 10 point smaller type “Audio Access Included”).My book doesn’t have that. I purchased this precisely because the Bass Book came with audio, I just didn’t realise there is a version without the audio. And as others have pointed out, why would you sell a version without the audio. This is pretty scummy, I don’t really mind paying extra (but get this: audio is *free* with the excellent “fundamental changes” books). But having two versions, with no way to get the extra content is just annoying.I went to the Hal Leonard website and there seems to be no option to purchase the audio tracks.Amazon should make it clearer in the listing that there are two versions. So now I am faced with the choice of just using this as is, or returning it (which is a hassle). As the other 1 star reviews might indicate this is just dumb deceptive marketing. Change the cover in a more visible way, or offer the means to purchase the content online. how hard could the latter be? you’d actually make customers happy.Stupid, stupid, stupid.Makes me want to avoid Hal Leonard products in future. And that’s a shame, because the content seems pretty good.

Helpful for beginners
I am using this book to learn to play the guitar (a challenge at my age-senior). The book is helpful-it seems to go at the right pace and includes interesting songs from a variety of genres. I like the fact that it uses mostly music notation instead of tabs- it helps to learn to read music. Only regret is that it doesn’t come with the Cds.

Very thorough
Exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been teaching myself to play and using a lot of online courses but there is nothing that compares to starting from scratch and learning the proper way. This book does not spend a lot of time on form but it does provide the rudimentary basics beginning with basic notes and music reading. If I am ever able to master everything this book has to offer I will not only be able to play guitar, I will be a musician.

Binding needs to be better quality
The binding is very weak. I had to replace it almost immediately and that’s kind of annoying. Wish they’d fix that as my guitar teacher stated it happens to most of his students.(I’ve purchased both the print edition and the kindle edition when I lost the printed version)

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that want to learn to play the guitar!!! I have been playing acoustic Guitar for several years using tabs.. I decided i would like to learn to read music and play it on my guitar…. This book makes reading music and playing it super easy!!! You learn the notes one string at a time, at your own pace…. And it don’t stop there you learn chords, strumming(something i had problems with) and more. I have other lesson books that don’t come anywhere close to comparing to this book…

The Best, Most Complete Basic Guitar Method Book
I have been teaching guitar for more than 40 years, and over those years I spent a lot of time with a couple of other popular guitar methods, specifically Alfred’s Basic Guitar and the similarly titled book published by Mel Bay.In my opinion, the Hal Leonard guitar method is more complete than any of its competitors. I used to teach chords on my own, and strumming and finger picking techniques, and leave the book to teach note reading, but the Hal Leonard book does it all and, most importantly, it seems to introduce new things at the right times in the student’s development.

Great method for teachers to use!
I use this and the Mel Bay books to teach beginner students (they are very similar methods, but each set of books include different examples to choose from when teaching). I have no complaints, though I do recommend using these books and supplementing them with your own exercises when teaching.

technical acuracy
easy to understand. an area that is often not approached by aspiring musicians probably because it can appear daunting, not attractive to the weekender. But can be the most important element for the long term, and rich friendship music can have in store for anyone seeking a buddy.

It’s all in the feet –
Excellent book for beginning guitarist, and for other players needing music reading practice
This book is good for kids and adults alike. Goes nice and easy, nothing too complicated, but still covers all the basics. Would highly recommend for anyone just beginning to play guitar. It’s also a great refresher for those who have been playing chords awhile, but never learned to read music. I’ve been playing guitar for 8 years, but mostly chords. I never really practiced reading music. My son is now taking lessons, and his teacher uses this book. I’m now learning along with my son. It’s never too late to teach an old dog a new trick!

Great for a beginner adult
I am adult beginning guitar player and I purchased this book as a supplement to the book my instructor required. I really like this book. It is a great introduction for those who don’t know the names of the strings or how to play notes and chords. I highly recommend the book for a new student wanted to start with the basics to learn guitar.
