Probably best used with instructor, but can also teach yourself with it
My daughter has been using the Hal Leonard Guitar Method books (she’s on #3 now) in conjunction with regular in person lessons. I’m toddling along behind her now, using them on my own. Obviously regular practice is what makes the most difference, but the book walks you through the basics clearly, helps you build strength and dexterity at a reasonable pace, and is easy to use. Would recommend it if you’re not starting from “0” in terms of your music knowledge or if using them in conjunction with regular lessons from a teacher.

Good book
I got this book for my 13 year old daughter because she is trying to teach herself the guitar, but only 1 hour she got it she came to me saying she was very confused and she was only on the 4th page, this is a nice learning book overall but I wouldn’t recommend it for younger kids or teenagers who dont already have a little bit of knowledge on how to play the guitar

One of the better beginner guitar books.
I have been a guitar player-teacher for over 60 years. In the old days we had students struggle through antiquated beginner books. Then came the Alfred method that we used for many years until Hal Leonard came out with this one. Students seem to make good progress using this well laid out book. Highly recommended with or without a teacher. The pages are laid out in good order with new skills presented then a page of two of reinforcing exercises. Remember if you try to teach yourself your teacher will not knowany more than you do. Find a good teacher!

.I’ve used several methods for teaching beginning guitarists and I like this Hal Leonard Book 1 the best. The print is big and clear. I like that it begins with teaching the individual notes showing them both on the scale and on the guitar.

I bought this because I want to work somewhere that uses it
The chord chart is at the back of the book by the way. This book is based around the idea that you are learning while having someone teach you, which is okay for the purpose I needed, but I don’t agree with material designed like that specifically for “beginners”. If you’re going to buy a book as a beginner, you are probably looking to learn on your own. If you are buying a book where it is only most useful if you have a teacher, you are probably a teacher.

Really good book. I like the provided music in it and the range of difficultly levels of the pieces. I taught myself with it. I have a music background and play the flute so it was easy to understand the theory of it. That may be the only issue for others but you will catch on or not play.

Not my top pick
I was looking for a book to use for middle school, guitar class. I decided not to use this one, after checking out about 4-5 guitar methods. The kids version of this one has many more popular songs int it and I am keeping that, but in the end, I ended up going with the Ernie Ball method. I liked that one because it is broken down very simply, has larger print, is easy to read, and includes better site reading practice, also, it has more tabs, and breaks down nicely.

It could teach on a more basic level. It skips over basic symbols and terms a beginner does not know and then doesn’t introduce them and expects a student to somehow know. A beginning student doesn’t even know the definition of a note.

This is the book which I have been seeking. It is very similar to the one I used when I took lessons as a child. If you are looking for a good basic beginners book this one is highly recommended. It will not make you a rock/country or Christian recording artist overnight, it will give you a firm foundation for reading notes and learning the strings.

Excellent book. Kinda nice that they teach you the notes on a string one at a time. However right after you learn the 4th string it skips to a couple chords and then resumes to learning the 5th string about 10 pages later. Just make sure you use the table of contents. You need to skip around at times for a more logical flow. Also, it would be nice if scales were in the book which incorperated what you learned thus far. I got these from my guitar teacher. I feel the book is really good but it is missing just a little something. I would still recommend it over other books I have seen.

No tabs, goes straight to staff notation
I didn’t do the “peek inside”; too bad for me. This book teaches you the staff notation (aka reading music). The problem is, the tab notation (which this book doesn’t use) is so much easier for a new guitarist to learn and be able to play something.Sure, being able to read music is all good and everything, but it can also be a turn-off for kids who are just starting out. I think tabs and guitar go together really well for a beginner.

I’ve been teaching guitar for about 8 years now. This was the first book I used for my students and I’ve stuck with it for all these years. The book has a good method for teaching the student to read music, the songs are good and the cds add another demension to the lessons, asa whole. I only wish book one got into chords a little more in-depth but I have found a way around that issue.

Best book for beginners with old time ethic.
This is a very comprehensive intro to the guitar. If one were to buy only one book to begin this should be the one. I have gifted it to two others already who were just beginning. For those who do not already read music, this will get them up to primary speed easily. If one were to simply follow this instruction and remain OFF YouTube, they would become proficient. The YouTube gig only complicates the process as well as displays many bad options. Just get a private quiet place and work through it. There is no shortcut, no play in 5 minutes. Just get over it and LEARN it properly. Without that ideal as a guide you will simply have a guitar in the closet somewhere soon. Without the old time ethic of simply settling in to actually learn something students will always give up and drift away from the goal.

Essential Book, but get the one with audio files.
Must have book for beginners to learn how to read sheet music. Beware, though, that this version does not have the accompanying audio files which makes things less useful since you can’t see how something is played, particularly for the more obscure tunes. Overall, would buy again if I lost it, it I’d get the one that has the audio files.

Not a bad start
This is more for a begginer however its lessons do go from very begginers to the experts. In the start it does tell you how a scale is formatted and notes are counted, does spend time teaching you to read them. However thats what I wanted, yes I know the scale (I played clarinet in school) yes I know how to read notes. I also didn’t know how to play a C on a guitar. This is not really for someone who wants to just play songs on this is more for someone who wants to learn a wide verity of songs, from country to rock, classical to metal. If you want to specialize in one maybe this book isn’t for you. However I like this book because its not just a tab book of here is Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” (its playing on the TV at this time) or whatever song you may want to play.

I hate going to music stores: limited choices, inflated prices on materials written decades ago, trying to find options sourced from other stores… Modern music outlets just suck. The fact that I can buy the same book online, minus the triple inflated price point because of DRM coded audio books included, is amazing. Wife and sister-in-law will love using this to learn and for me to brush up on my music reading skills that are lacking.

Hal Leonard’s marketing sucks – Buy books from fundamental changes instead
So here’s the deal I got exactly what I ordered. There are two versions of the book. One is about 10 bucks more and under the “guitar method” on the front cover, top left, there is (in 10 point smaller type “Audio Access Included”).My book doesn’t have that. I purchased this precisely because the Bass Book came with audio, I just didn’t realise there is a version without the audio. And as others have pointed out, why would you sell a version without the audio. This is pretty scummy, I don’t really mind paying extra (but get this: audio is *free* with the excellent “fundamental changes” books). But having two versions, with no way to get the extra content is just annoying.I went to the Hal Leonard website and there seems to be no option to purchase the audio tracks.Amazon should make it clearer in the listing that there are two versions. So now I am faced with the choice of just using this as is, or returning it (which is a hassle). As the other 1 star reviews might indicate this is just dumb deceptive marketing. Change the cover in a more visible way, or offer the means to purchase the content online. how hard could the latter be? you’d actually make customers happy.Stupid, stupid, stupid.Makes me want to avoid Hal Leonard products in future. And that’s a shame, because the content seems pretty good.

Exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been teaching myself to play and using a lot of online courses but there is nothing that compares to starting from scratch and learning the proper way. This book does not spend a lot of time on form but it does provide the rudimentary basics beginning with basic notes and music reading. If I am ever able to master everything this book has to offer I will not only be able to play guitar, I will be a musician.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that want to learn to play the guitar!!! I have been playing acoustic Guitar for several years using tabs.. I decided i would like to learn to read music and play it on my guitar…. This book makes reading music and playing it super easy!!! You learn the notes one string at a time, at your own pace…. And it don’t stop there you learn chords, strumming(something i had problems with) and more. I have other lesson books that don’t come anywhere close to comparing to this book…

The Best, Most Complete Basic Guitar Method Book
I have been teaching guitar for more than 40 years, and over those years I spent a lot of time with a couple of other popular guitar methods, specifically Alfred’s Basic Guitar and the similarly titled book published by Mel Bay.In my opinion, the Hal Leonard guitar method is more complete than any of its competitors. I used to teach chords on my own, and strumming and finger picking techniques, and leave the book to teach note reading, but the Hal Leonard book does it all and, most importantly, it seems to introduce new things at the right times in the student’s development.

technical acuracy
easy to understand. an area that is often not approached by aspiring musicians probably because it can appear daunting, not attractive to the weekender. But can be the most important element for the long term, and rich friendship music can have in store for anyone seeking a buddy.

It’s all in the feet –
Excellent book for beginning guitarist, and for other players needing music reading practice
This book is good for kids and adults alike. Goes nice and easy, nothing too complicated, but still covers all the basics. Would highly recommend for anyone just beginning to play guitar. It’s also a great refresher for those who have been playing chords awhile, but never learned to read music. I’ve been playing guitar for 8 years, but mostly chords. I never really practiced reading music. My son is now taking lessons, and his teacher uses this book. I’m now learning along with my son. It’s never too late to teach an old dog a new trick!

would have been 4 stars but no sound files
At a private teacher I do like this book…. but obtaining sound files is proving to be next to impossible. Of course you can shell out 13.46 for the cd but that seems a little unfair. Anyway, I did find it in iTunes store and purchased it and … viola….the sound files are included and actually will play….. but they are too fast for beginners. My plan was to find these files on my laptop (I know they are not coming from the cloud as they work even when I turn off my wifi) and use the Anytune app to slow them down…. but I can’t find them on my hard drive! They are there somewhere … but I can’t locate them. Anyway, if you are reading this and have found these files please let me know in a review. I would say in the questions section but for some reason I can’t find the “ask question ” link…. ugh.

Been around for a generation
The original edition(s) of this classic beginner’s book date back to the 1960s. When I was 8 or 9 years old (1965-ish), my dad bought a beginner’s guitar for me, along with this book. I was glad to see that the book is still around [in an updated edition], and I bought it as a future gift for my grandson… or someone else if he decides he doesn’t want to learn the guitar.

very good
My friend wanted me to teach her 8 year old son how to play the guitar, so she asked a retired music teacher what a good book to use is, and he recommended this one. So we each got it and so far I am very pleased with it. I have never known how to read music (I learned to play chords years ago, but never to read music)but this book teaches to read music as you learn which string of the guitar plays which note and where it is on the music staff. I am learning things as I teach my little friend also. I really like this book. It is simple to understand and it is laid out in a way that I (and my student) don’t feel overwhelmed. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about playing than just chords.

Easy to understand and very helpful
I’m three years in to re-teaching myself piano with Alfred’s books and I’ve always wanted to play guitar as well so I bought this one. All of Alfred’s books are easy to understand but, as with anything, practice makes perfect. I’ve been doing the lessons for just over a month now and am pleased with my progress. Playing any instrument takes time and practice and I find myself wishing I could play more than three simple lines of ‘Ode To Joy’ but ,as with the piano, I know I’m learning things at this necessary stage and this book is very helpful.

Not the most inspiring elementary music book.
This is an elementary level book, which has pictures, fretboard diagrams and standard notation. Many of the songs are traditional ones but others would be unfamiliar to the twelve year old target reader. It was designed to use song files which were not included and not linked so I suppose this means the learner must learn the song before they can hear it played. So I doubt that any child I know would be motivated to practice without strong mentoring from a teacher or family member. At this point I’d say it would not be as effective otherwise.

Good method, but not so good theory
It seems to progress in a very methodical way from one string, two fingers, onto the next string and eventually all fingers. So the student can work up those callouses and build the finger strength gradually. I’m not sure I like how the theory is presented, and so I use a separate book for the music theory. That’s why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Miss the chord chart
It is still a good tutorial for learning to read music on a guitar. However, I REALLY miss the chord chart that they used to have inside the back cover. It is now best for only note by note playing.I used this many, many years ago when I was learning guitar, so this has probably been through several new editions since then. But, one of the most useful references was the the index with finger charts for nearly any chord. If I had known that it no longer contained this, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it. Will have to use on-line chord references instead.

Great for older beginners!
I use the Faber series for all my students. The only book in the series I’m not wild about is the primer level, so whenever I have a bright enough/old enough student–even 7 years old, I’ll start them right into the Piano Adventures Level 1 Accelerated version. Great stuff. Teaches very systematically and not too fast for all but the youngest students. Their arrangements are very musical. I’ve been teaching piano for over 20 years and have used various methods in the past, but switched to Faber about 5 years ago and love it!
