Excellent blueprint, here are some tips…
This is not a “so you want to rock” book you find at the music store chain, this is to drumming what sanding and joinery is to a woodworker. Anybody that calls themselves a drummer has this hurdle to climb, a must for a serious drummer. My 1st teacher gave me this and “Stick Control” in the 1981 when I started taking drum lessons. I wasn’t sure why I was learning to swing when the trend was rock, but I soon found myself deconstructing every song into these patterns. This book is written in jazz notation, meaning that it does not include the ride cymbal and hi-hat patterns in every bar. You should be able to play all of these patterns with a swing ride (dotted eight note) and the hit-hat on 2 and four. It sounds easy, but playing straight 8th or 16th notes on the left hand while swinging in triplet time on the right can really be frustrating. Make sure to reverse your hands after you’ve mastered your dominant technique, this breaks the limb dependance. My teacher told me that I should be relaxed enough to be able to play all of these patterns and recite the gettysburg address at the same time. This book unravels rhythm in a way that has been duplicated, but never matched over the years.

Ted Reed – Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer [Paperback]
Great Book.MANY MANY Professional SESSION drummers have worked out of this book, and teach from it as well.Page 38This page most session guys know by heart. Just take a lesson from one and ask them about it. Theyll play it off of the top of their head.OK – why is this book great?First: It very much gives you Jazz phrasing / rhythms in a nut shell. These rhythmic figures are very Jazz language based / representative. There are MANY ways to use these rhythms – you need a GOOD teacher to show you how. There is so much to apply this to, it just goes on and on.Buy this book and The Drummer’s Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson. Alans book goes into detail on the MANY ways to use Ted Reeds syncopation.Ask any professional Jazz drummer, and theyll say the same (OR MAYBE) they WONT until YOU PAY THEM FOR A PRIVATE LESSON. Well, now you know for free. Go knock yourself out and woodshed. When it pays off thank me for this review.best of luck, have fun with it.

One of the best
I started using this book when I first took lessons about 45 years ago and after 2 years of lessons I got tired of reading and just wanted to play by ear which I have done on and off ever since. About a year or so ago I decided to start learning how to read again and started taking lessons to do so. We use a variety of different books and when I am having trouble playing something I find that I will constantly come back to this book to practice the exercises that pertain to the problems I am having. I probably refer back to this book more than any other book I have and I think it is great for any level of skill or ability that you have. I regret not keeping up on reading like I should have years ago but it’s never too late to continue to learn and I highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning or who has been playing for years. It’s only 8 bucks!

I bought this copy of the book as a gift to a friend who is interested in percussion playing and he is getting great use out of
My first copy of this book dates back to 1978. I’ve been playing drums for 36 years and still find this book helpful. The book contains the basics, but it is incredibly versitile and limited only by your imagination. One can take the patterns and split them up between different limbs. The book can be used as snare drums parts over a jazz feel beat. You can take some of the patterns and play them on the bell of the cymbal while playing a samba beat. You can use the patterns as drum fills at varying speeds, drums and styles. I reccomend this book to both the beginner and expert drum players. I bought this copy of the book as a gift to a friend who is interested in percussion playing and he is getting great use out of the book.

Indispensable
The thing I love about good drumming instructional books is they never go obsolete and are always adaptable to different systems and methods of teaching. For example one can play through the book using Moeller strokes or orchestrate the exercises around the kit to make the manual endlessly helpful.

An essential addition to the drummer’s “biblical” cannon.
Reed’s Syncopation is an endlessly challenging method book. It teaches control of time, feel and dynamics. It is especially useful for drummers who can use the various syncopated figures to play “against” ostinato rhythms.Other musicians can also benefit from the contents of this text. Although percussion notation (e.g. snare drum note heads in the “c”space) is used throughout the book, any player can adapt the figures to their own instrument, e.g. interpreting the rhythms as progressions within a scale or mode.Another aspect of this book is its suitability for all levels of players. Beginners will appreciate its “progressive” difficulty (easy to challenging) and more advanced players will see endless possibilities for rhythmic adventures.Beginners should use this book with a competent teacher, as it is easy to imagine that there is not much going on with each example.Highly recommended.

All music students could benefit from this book.
I am currently using this book to teach my son basic drumming with a roland practice pad. It has been a fantastic help. This book would be helpful to any beginning student learning to read music, not just drummers, since it so clearly breaks down rhythmic notation. The exercise progressions make a lot of sense, and there are quarter note guides that align the drum notes relative to the downbeat, which is very helpful for learning syncopation.

I learned about this book through story about Bill Stewart saying that he used this book among others. This study book is really a step by step method to teach your brain syncopation. If one knows the introductory drills you only do the excercises at end of chapter. Great book. Methodical and a road map for teachers!

The best, not 2nd best …
or maybe I’m being unfair … but I first used Syncopation back when I first took drum lessons (1965 or so) … and I remembered many of the instruction beats to the point where I entered my 4th or 5th childhood at age 52 and bought the book again (and there they were — 1 e & a, etc.). Between this and […] (nate brown, instructor), relearning to read and getting my chops back was a breeze (and nostalgic). If you’re thinking about drumming, you gotta have this … which is rated the 2nd best all-time book behind “stick control” … I never used stick control but will probably take a look-see down the road.

At first I didn’t understand how to use this book. Just glancing at the pages, I was like “why would anybody write a book like that? And why would anyone buy it?” Then a friend showed me how to use it – and later I immersed myself in the subculture of YouTube drummers who have developed endless ways to mash up these exercises. No drummer should be without this one.

Excellent book.
I got this for a drum studio class that am taking Arizona State University and so far my reading has been challenged. I personally would recommend this book if you plan to get into big band chart reading and sight reading. There are very helpful written charts that are most commonly seen in big band music and excellent exercises that you can use for left hand comping in swing music. Its a hard book to learn but this is going to jump your reading big time. Take your time with book, don’t rush through it. There are simple steps to take when approaching this book. So have fun and keep swinging. 🙂

Excellent, straightforward book on basic drum rhythms and note emphasis. An excellent book for all levels. Sometimes it’s forgotten that a drummers main purpose is to keep rythm, everything past there is important, but rhythm is its foundation. Reed’s book is perfect to set to a metronome and solidify your internal rhythm in context with a large amount of common drum patterns Ii.e. (eighths, triplets, sixteenths, etc.)Syncopation is an essential book to add to any drummers library. Five stars, highly recommend.

Get syncopated!
The word syncopation is often misunderstood and misused. This book is a great addition to Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone in developing right/ left coordination with accents. Work it work it work it. You’ll be glad you did. I had both these books in my formative years and I revisit them to keep loose and precise. I’m convinced both of these books helped with developing my chops and ability to recognize patterns which made learning songs much faster and easier. Get it, work it!

EVERY SERIOUS MUSICIAN SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK
Upon receiving this book, it was in mint condition and the packaging was of good quality as well. I bought this book because as a musician, I know you can’t get far without really knowing your scales and theory just like you probably won’t be good at, really, ANY genre without knowing about syncopation. Although the title is directed towards drummers, anyone who plays ANY instrument should invest in this book. It will not only help you as a performer, but also in terms of personal expression and comprehension.

Great skill development for drummers of all levels.
As an advanced beginner on the drum kit this book has helped tremendously in improving the basic coordination between my hands and feet.I started with the book 4-Way Coordination to try to get my limbs to work with each other. 4-Way Coordination is great but, at least for me, hard! Syncopation is more at my level. I work through both and recommend both.

A favorite old wine!
This book deals with syncopation and it starts with the basics to prepare you for the complex. This is a medicine you must take and master to play effectively. To some, some of these exercises may prove very challenging. However, you are determine to succeed because you have no choice. You want to be your best. It is elementary. It is needed to give breath to your performance. Again, a favorite well aged wine!

Great for a new percussionist or seasoned professional
This book and “Stick Control” are the backbone of rudiment books for percussionists. It is no less than essential that this book be used to learn or tune-up one’s understanding of accenting unexpected notes in percussion play. All of my comments in “Stick Control” apply here. Get this book and after you are have completed your first pass through this book there is no way you wont be a better drummer as a result of your work. Isn’t that what it all about.

This is one of the most useful books available for studying drums. It is filled with practical rhythms that can be used over and overin different ways. The possibilities are truly endless. These “routines”are not explained in the book, but most drum teachers are (or should be)familiar with the concept. If you own only one drum book, this should bethe one! This book can also be used for rhythmic study on any instrument.

Reminds me of over-xeroxed pages. On p. 54 –59 I had to whiteout the unnecessary ‘3’ over the repeated triplets due to continual confusion with the accent marks. That was a lot of work. Should give it 3 stars but it really is a great book. Wish Alfred would clean up the copy.

Not Just for Drummers!!!
It’s a shame really that this book is titled “for the modern drummer”.Any musician that plays different rhythmic patterns (which is pretty much all of them) will benefit greatly from this book. All the lines are in 4/4 time with steady quarter notes shown marking the “beat”. So the exercises really consist of all the patterns shown on the top. It’s a simple enough concept, but he had the good sense to write it all out for the rest of us. All your basic patterns: quarter notes, dotted eighths, 16th’s, 16’s mixed with 8’s and all varied in order and with different rests so they come on different beats each time. As you progress through the book, the lines get more complicated and intricate until you get to the syncopated section.I remember this book from when I was a drummer in high school almost 30 years ago. Now I play rhythm guitar, and am looking to get away from the “standard” strumming patterns and get more creative. This book will help me do that. It will also help immensely with learning and playing leads and solos. It really doesn’t matter if you play drums, guitar, sax, keyboard, bass, or mandolin this book will help teach you to recognize and play rhythms – and that is a key part of sight-reading.I guess the TL:DR version would be: If you play a musical instrument, get this book. It will be the some of the best use of money and time you’ll ever spend.

Great exercises and ideas that really develop when you can work with a teacher to help flesh out ideas and give you creative patterns to incorporate into your drumming from these exercises. Excellent book – interesting rhythms for beginners and intermediate players who read music
I am surprised to see comments about how this book isn’t for beginners. I’m very much a beginner (have only been playing a few months) and have loved it. There are a couple of things in here that are too hard for my current level, but don’t we all want to stretch? It has a decent range from very easy to quite a bit harder and plenty for the beginner. I wouldn’t buy it as a first drum book – but I did in fact buy it as my second. And, it’s great. t love that it challenges me and that there are things I will have to come back to when I become more knowledgeable. Additionally, the rhythms are more interesting and not as straight forward as most books that are appropriate for beginners. That’s a big plus in my book and it makes me want to practice more and longer. I agree that some of the handwritten notes are a little sloppy and inconsistent. This may sound weird, but I find that charming and an additional challenge. And, it adds to the beauty. It’s like the difference between hearing a live drummer and a drum machine.

So good i just had to review it!
If only i had found out about this book sooner! As a drum teacher for the past 12 years, i can easily say Syncopation by Ted Reed is the best most effective book to get beginners started with learning to read rhythms. Some of my students who at first had zero reading ability managed to sight read quarter notes all the way through different 16th note rhythms by the end of class, identifying all the different rests along the way while keeping a steady kick pulse underneath. All this thanks to how systematically the exercises are written out, getting more challenging as you progress through the pages. One step at a time, slowly but surely. Not just for beginner or intermediate drummers; i come back to this book just to brush up on my sight reading every once in awhile, or i’d pick some of the exercises out and use it as double pedal exercises or independence stuff like left foot clave, right/left hand ostinatos etc. A thousand different ways to use this wonderful book!

JUST THE SNARE AND BASS DRUMS
I know everyone says you should start here when learning to play drums. I’m not so sure. This book seems to have been written in 1987 for a kid in a marching band who has a music teacher working with him. I’m trying to learn my way around my new drum kit, but this book has nothing about coordination or technique with toms or cymbals. There seems to be almost no explanation at all of what’s going on – just a few pages of reference material then endless pages of sheet music to play the snare and bass drums with increasing complexity. I’m following the book, but without other resources like a real instructor and YouTube channels, this book won’t be much help. In fairness, it was written at a time well before people attempted to become self-taught at anything.

A very good book for anyone taking drum lessons with a teacher.
For the last 8 years my passion for music has grown so much that I have learned how to play (at least to some degree) numerous musical (Ukulele, Harmonica, Recorder, Flute, American drumming and hand drums, and many other percussion) instruments. Over the years I have taken many courses and purchased numerous books to improve my skill level.I just purchased this wonderful 80 page manual (Alfred’s drum Method book 1 by Sandy Feldstein and Dave Black) which is organized into 39 drum playing lessons. The introductory part of this volume covers the snare drum, getting ready to play, the bass drum, the cymbals and elements of music. The lessons cover a wide range of drum practice lessons but without a drum playing teacher it will not be easy to follow some of the material. They do have a Drum DVD available for purchase which no doubt will help in learning the lessons in the manual. If you are taking drum lessons this book will enhance your drum learning sessions.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated tai Chi, Qigong and Yoga stretching for seniors and the physically challenged).

Good practice drum and music for beginners
My son can play most of the music he started drumming last year. He likes it and took it home to practice where his mom has a snare and high hat in the garage so I’d say he enjoys it more easily than a big set at times.

Get it, and don’t call me Sandy.
Alfred is my best friend. That’s truth. I only wish I could Alfred in person, but I have recently discovered that Alfred is no longer with us. He apparently was a man named Sandy. I suppose I would forgo using my real name when writing a book about drum methods. “Sandy’s Drum Method”…. nope, it just doesn’t have the right sound (get it? .. right sound?)Anyway, the book is great for those wanting to learn the basics of reading snare drum sheet music. It won’t make you a master of the drum, but it is a step in the right direction. If you have a yearning to learn drumming, or just want to know why some music notes look so very weird, this book will help you in either case.

Great beginner’s book
A drumming teacher asked that we purchase this book. We have been using it for about 5 months.Like other Alfred books, the quality of the book is excellent. Staffs and notes are easy to read. The paper is thick and the book stays open well on a stand. We have packed it in suitcase and brought it with us on vacation to practice, and it holds up well. The lessons progress on a logical pace and is just right for the beginner. Sometimes our kids get frustrated easily. With this book, they are making progress and learning about rhythm very easily (there’s still griping about practice, trust me); it makes learning more fun. We practice one page daily and it takes about 20 minutes to do it a few times. Would definitely recommend it.

Purchased the songbook for my son who recently particpated in the Indiana State School Music Association – ISSMA comprtition. We saw two other drummers with the same book. My son has been playing just over a year and the Solo #10 he played was challenging and well received by the judge. The songbook was delivered on time and undamaged. I would recommend this song book to other drummers.

One of the best of over 50 available snare drum books
I’ve examined over 50 books on snare drum instruction and this is one of the top two. (Drum Method by William Schinstine & Fred Hoey is the other.) Good modern quality and sequence of material. 39 lessons and 23 solos. 2-line combination studies for each lesson (good for duets). Counts and sticking indicated in light gray. Nice illustrations for each new rudiment. Roll is introduced in Lesson 17, 5-stroke in Lesson 18, 9-stroke in Lesson 19, 13- and 17-stroke in Lesson 20, flam Lesson 27, drag in Lesson 34, ruff in Lesson 35. Minor nitpick is that you need to skip around to get rudiments in a better order. Also, it’s missing the single stroke rolls and paradiddles! Brief bass drum and cymbal technique. Great value for the money.

Great starter book for snare drum lessons
It’s a classic. I appreciate that the book is slow and methodical (great for elementary school kids), and that they emphasize the counting of the beats/subdivisions. It is also written by percussionists (vs. other methods like “Essential Elements” — terrible organization for percussionists, although it’s good for the winds and brass) which I appreciate.

Misleading product information
Amazon’s customer review set-up runs into problems in the case of books which come with or without CDs or DVDs. Similar problems are found in in the case of abridged audio books, which are often quite different from the printed original, with their own good and bad points. It would be nice if product descriptions and reviews for obviously distinct original and “spin-off” products were not transferred automatically to the others with the same name. Reviews could still be accessed by clicking to open Amazon’a “all editions” page for these products. The product description for this instruction book indicates that it comes with a CD. This is not always true. The product which comes with the CD is this one:
Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1
. Another version is available without the CD:
Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1
. You may be reading this review on the Amazon page for either product. Make sure you get the one you want. The book without CD could be useful where there is an experienced player to teach the learner, but most people would probably prefer the product with the CD.

This book is great so far. As an absolute beginner I find it fairly easy to understand. Granted I’ve just gotten started but if the rest of the book progresses in the same fashion as the first few exercises then I should at least be able to play a few tunes and have an idea of musical notation and TABs. I think this is a great book for beginners.

Not as good as their Guitar Method Series
This book is ok. I would have prefered if it were formatted the same way as the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, where standard notation is taught first and tablature is introduced later. Presenting both notation and tab from the start is confusing for a lot of my students. It’s a lot to look at while one is just beginning to learn to read and play music.

great book. It begins with basics and build up with well explained examples. I was expecting the book to jump in with chords so I was surprised to see that the program started with learning the notes on each string and the C major scale. That exercise was actually a good foundation for the chord lessons that followed! The struming techniques were well illustrated. Great Book to start as long as you have prior music experience, teacher or guide
I bought this book for my wife who is just starting to learn to play the uke. She played clarinet years ago in school but this is her first instrument since. This book is a great foundation for learning not just harmony but also melody, etc. She struggled a bit with some of the concepts but I was able to guide her though it so I feel this book is better suited if you have prior music experience or for working with a teacher. There is a wealth of information here and working through it all will give you a solid foundation to be a well rounded musician. I’ve used similar Hal Leonard method books for Guitar in the past and they are all good.

Complete course for learning the ukulele
This book, along with the second book in the series, is a complete course for teaching the beginner to play the ukulele. It’s designed to take a total beginner and teaches them to play. You have to start at the beginning and progress your way through to the end – it doesn’t work to just dip in the middle. The author’s approach is a bit unusual because he starts off teaching finger-picking individual notes to create melodies (tunes). Most books or classes start by teaching strumming chords, singing at the same time. In this book, chords are taught later. Some music theory is also taught, but not to a major degree.I actually bought this book then joined a class. The book’s approach didn’t mesh with the class’s approach (which emphasised strumming songs), so I put the books aside. It was only much later, after attending the classes for about 18 months (great fun, by the way), and reading about ukulele playing and music in general that I began to appreciate the clever way this book is put together. It’s pitched to the total beginner. It doesn’t ask too much, and gradually builds the learner up. The songs are chosen to be playable by the beginner. It also introduces some music concepts along the way. The CD is very good at demonstrating the play described in the book and the author gives further explanation. I think the CD is essential to the book. The book is not without it’s faults, but most of these are minor. I think an explanation of it’s approach and what the student will be able to do at the course’s end would have been helpful. Perhaps some further advice on how to go about practicing would have been good. Some descriptions of the likely difficulties a student might encounter as they are learning and how to get over them would have been useful (and encouraging). For example, the awkwardness of getting your left hand into the correct position to form the chords, and also discomfort and slowness changing chords. Perhaps more explanation of how the individual techniques being taught fit into the big picture of playing ukulele songs. What do they contribute? Maybe some advice on how to choose a good beginners ukulele (and avoid a bad one). Most of these are minor tweaks, rather than deal-breaking complaints. I’ve come back to these books as I’m now learning finger picking. I now realise what the author was trying to do.I think it is possible for a beginner to learn to play the ukulele – both strumming and finger-picking – from these two books. I don’t think the learning experience would be overwhelming for the total beginner. I guess that’s the beauty of the author’s teaching method.

Nice introduction
I’ve been playing uke for a little over a year, but I want to go beyond just strumming. This book is helping me begin to play melodies on the ukulele. I have very little formal music education, so a beginner book like this is good for bridging that gap, as the emphasis is on working with the basics of notes and tablature as well as keeping in time. The exercises are clear, well laid out. Each one builds upon the previous work.Since I’m using kindle on an IPad, my one critique would be that some music pages are split up. This can be an issue if they won’t appear together as you play. Of course, as you memorize each tune, this becomes less of an issue.I had purchased a physical copy of the book and misplaced it. I am very pleased the Kindle edition of this book was under $5.00!The physical copy doesn’t include a CD; the audio files are online. I love having the audio together with the book!

Needs Digital Audio Library
This is a decent book for beginners that will help you learn music theory and some basics for playing the ukulele. It is relatively easy to follow even with only some prior musical experience, and something that can supplement lessons very well. I like it, but am also very disappointed that Hal Leonard has a website for digital recordings for some of its books and this one is NOT included. An introductory book should have audio recordings so learners can hear strumming techniques and the included songs to begin to develop their own playing techniques and style.

One of the finest ukulele tutorials in the market
This is one of the finest ukulele tutorials in the market. I have no rhythm and I’m tone deaf. Learning music, even on the delightful and charming ukulele, is a chore for me unlike anything most people can imagine. This is one of two books I constantly fall back on to refresh my most fundamental skills, to remind myself the differences between minor and major scales, to guide my clumsy fingers as I strum chords, pluck melodies, or just play around with different combinations of sounds. I cannot count the number of “learn to play the ukulele” books in my library, but this is one of two that I replace every time the covers tear, the pages get ruined by spilled coffee, or my current copy gets lost.Everything the beginner needs is here, presented in a smooth, natural progression from the very first notes to complex strum patterns interlaced with a variety of flourishes and melodies.

Good starting point…
Okay, I don’t know how to play anything so I started with this as suggested for beginners. Just bought a ukulele and since this was featured got this also. I think it’s pretty good for someone just learning the basics about music and playing the uke. Have not put the CD on yet, until I can get a little more experience with the fingering, but it was included with the book…one person said it wasn’t, so don’t know what happened to theirs. Of course you’ll get really tired of Row, Row Your Boat and Twinkle, Twinkle…but I already have my eye on some Dylan (YES, he really has a songbook for ukuleles!) and a Blues book, Waaayyyy on down the road. I think Lil Rev gives good information and instructions and at least gets you started doing something that at least sounds familiar. Will probably also get his second book when I get through this one. This might help someone who already plays a guitar to get acuainted with Ukulele chords, but probably not much else.

Great start for anyone with basic music knowledge, but also suitable for complete beginners.

Be careful and choose the 2010 edition.
If buying the kindle book, look at all available options and choose the 2010 EDITION ONLY. The 2005 edition, while cheaper by a few dollars is inferior quality. The musical notation portions of that edition were scanned images that are grainy and blurry and the overall formatting is poor. Also it doesn’t include any of the audio tracks. Even if you don’t want the audio specifically, it’s worth the few dollars extra to have the crisp images of the later edition.

Solid Introduction to Understanding the Ukulele
I bought this as a Christmas present for some great Nieces and Nephews. I went over it first and found the book to be a super introduction for a person who really wants to learn to play more than the normal three chords on a Uke.This set is terrific if you are interested in stretching and learning to understand what can really be done on a Uke rather than just getting stuck in one key. This book will easily lead you out of the doldrums which happen in many beginning instrument courses. It is a great source for a foundation of learning which … is what you need to play any instrument. The price is right at Amazon, the DVD / CD just reinforces what is being taught and progress is as fast as you want it to be.Dion – Chicago

It’s ok, it just may not be right for everybody.
I am an instructor. I do like a lot of the material in this book however I personally don’t like to teach out of books with TAB with younger students. So, I would not recommend it to my younger students, but I would use it with older students, so that is why I gave it only 3 stars. The book has some good songs in it. If you want to start working on melodies and can’t read music then this book may be fine for you.

What i expected.
Arrived on time. I like that the book uses “tabs” instead of just notes. It has the notes as well but the tabs make it perfect for beginners. This will be a great tool to help my students learn proper fingerings of chords and a few basic melodies.

Great for beginners or as a refresher
Great book to have on hand if you’re just starting out on the ukulele. It goes over all of the basics notes, chords, and playing techniques, and even teaches you how to read sheet music and tablature. Songs in the book range from children’s melodies to folk, blues, bluegrass and even some classical. Can’t wait to master them all and then pick up Book 2!

Best choice
I wish I’d found this book earlier, it is so helpful. I feel I am making real progress at last. It is so well set out and clearly explains everything and you don’t need to be able to read music to understand it. I am so happy I have found this. The examples are not difficult to follow and at last I feel I’m getting somewhere. I highly recommend this for beginners (like me).

I’ll admit I was skeptical about this method book, …
I’ll admit I was skeptical about this method book, but this was just a reminder to me to not judge a book by its size. Every page of this 50 page book is chock full of lessons and songs that progress as you learn. This is a MUST for a new ukulele player.

OK for Me. But for You, Who Knows?
Being a complete beginner, the first part of this book gave me a decent start. However, once I got past the first few pages, I began to find contradictions between this book and other, mostly online, sources concerning some of the chord fingerings. I then began to find more useful information other places.

Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1 (with audio CD) (Bk. 1)
A very basic book about the ukulele but if you are starting out and have no background in music or understanding about reading notes and chords this is a good place to start. The Ukulele is a fun instrument to learn, wish I had found it 20 years ago and the Hal Leonard book is a good place to start. If you have a background in music, skip Book 1 and good onto Book 2. I suggest you consider purchasing both at the same time and save yourself some time. The CD is also a useful tool as you get to listen to what you should sound like.

Do not spend money on this book
I’ve been playing ukulele for about two weeks and everything in this book really put me farther behind. I don’t think it’s necessary to learn the single string notes when learning to play the ukulele because I’ve been practicing learning songs in chord form. This taught me nothing I didn’t already learn from using youtube FOR FREE. I am so upset I spent money on this unhelpful book that was also a huge waste of time reading and trying to play along. There are pages where the notes and tabs do not go together and it makes no sense. See my attached photo. This book simply will not be helpful in advancing your skills. Perhaps it’s because I can read music, but this book was incredibly confusing and the opposite of what I was hoping to get from this purchase. If you really want a ukulele book like I did, save your money and get a different one, or better yet: go to a music store and see what you’re getting before you buy it.

Confusing lessons
Very disjointed lessons. Book is supposed to be for beginners, and one of the first strum patterns is very difficult and has to be counted as 16th notes. I have spoken with two ukulele instructors and a number of players, and none of them recommend trying this pattern. After introducing this pattern, the author then goes back to a very simple strum pattern. My instructor rewrote some of the chords in some of the songs, which is counterproductive. We both became frustrated with the lessons, and I have switched to other instruction books.

Simple pieces, bit boring/basic
My background: 22 year old, been playing less than a year (true beginner).I bought this to help me improve and practice my skills as I learn to play the piano. I bought the book used but it was in great condition. The pieces are composed well and they include helpful tips and questions to keep you engaged and reaffirm your sheet reading knowledge. It’s a true beginners book, anyone with significant experience would be really bored. Why did I knock off a star? I feel there isn’t really anything special about it.I get that it’s an exercise book, but almost all the songs are included in my instruction book series (Alfred all in one lesson/theory course). They are very basic, boring pieces that you find in most instruction courses (non copyrighted generally). The two nice thing is that it includes: duets on almost all the pieces to play with your teacher (so if you are interested in that it’s a good piece to add to your collection) and : a repertoire list in the back (nice to keep track of the pieces you have mastered but tbh you could just make a list for yourself and keep it pinned up somewhere).Overall: I probably won’t even use it that much after this year. It’s good to work through once but then you probably won’t touch it again, so I wouldn’t suggest paying too much for it. Good book to write in and use as practice. Despite its title I feel that it would actually be well suited to children beginners as well (maybe 10+).That’s all she wrote: a general reminder to please leave reviews do other consumers can make smart purchases 🙂

I love the FABER Piano Lesson and Performance books from the pre-reader all the way to lesson 5. These though were very disappointing and boring. They just made my adult students and older students feel blah when they played them. I don’t like the serious at all.

My favorite series for students above age 10
The Faber series (using all 4 books – Theory, Technique and Artistry, Lesson, and Performance) are by far my favorite curriculum for older beginner students. The reason I don’t give 5 stars is that 1) Amazon.com does not display them together and it is VERY hard to find all 4 of the right level. It is NOT user-friendly. To the point that I ordered one set, took them to a local music store and asked them to carry it because parents could rarely get the right books without my assistance.2). There is a British version and and American version. Some students have received one, some the other. In the US, we use different words for rhythm. For example: our quarter note is a “crotchet” in Great Britain. That’s awkward to explain to a 12 year old boy!

Good music book
I teach piano to my grandchildren ages 7 and 10. They like this publication and find it non-intimidating. The 10 year old just finished the last piece in the book and was very proud to play it to his parents. The book may be a little easy for him but it gives him some fun and relaxing pieces to play. You can’t just have challenging pieces or they will loose interest. Practice must be fun and rewarding.

Faber is unbelievable.
The music books by Faber are unbelievable. I switched to Zfaberare from another Artie’s because Faber had more music theory and better compositions. Am very impressed with this series. Great for any serious student.

Great for adult beginners!
The Faber Accelerated books for Older learners are wonderful. The pace is fast enough to be interesting for someone like me, who listens to a lot of classical and jazz music. The song selections are pretty, sometimes even beautiful — rare in a book for beginners.

For the Adult Beginner
As an adult beginner piano student, I don’t want to be playing “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” This book provides me with music that sounds great for a beginner. They are easy to play but not so cutesy. Almost all the pieces are duets with the teacher. When we play together, I sound like a pro. This book works in conjunction with all the other Accelerated Piano Adventures books to coordinate the skills with the piece. It’s a great way to learn piano.

Loved this book. I taught myself (as an adult) using this book and am now working through it with my students. I found that all of the books in level 1 are awesome. I highly recommend getting the theory, technique and artistry, and performance books for each level to supplement and engrave the things learned throughout the lesson book.

Buen complemento
